6 pets, including duck, killed in house fire
Several pets died in a Rutland house fire Sunday afternoon.
Kelowna Fire Dispatch received numerous 911 calls reporting a house fire in the 1500 block of McKenzie Road at 1:48 p.m.
On arrival, crews reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the building.
Crews knocked down the fire from the exterior before entering the home, said platoon Capt. Kelly Stephens.
Four dogs, one cat and a duck died in the fire, said Stephens. No one was home at the time of the fire. Fire damage was contained to the back of the home’s main floor and deck, with the rest of the structure receiving heavy smoke damage.
The residents of the home — one adult and two children — are unable to stay in the home because of the damage.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
