French immersion program expanding in Petawawa
The French immersion program is being expanded in Petawawa.
In his report to the October meeting of the Renfrew County District School Board, Pino Buffone, education director, said staff conducted a series of public consultation meetings on the evenings of Oct. 18 and 19 of this year at both Herman Street Public School and Valour JK-12 School, regarding the expansion of French immersion at Herman Street PS from JK to Grade 4 for the upcoming school year.
Currently, Herman Street offers French immersion for JK and SK, while Valour has French immersion from JK to Grade 12.
“The expansion of the French immersion program at Herman Street Public School will assist in addressing the space pressure issues at Valour JK-12 School and will enhance the viability of both programs in the Petawawa area,” Buffone said.
Starting in the 2018-2019 school year, all JK registrations for the students in the Herman Street PS zone will be required to attend their home school, he said. All students from the Herman Street PS zone who are currently signed up at Valour in JK- Grade 8 may remain at Valour if they so wish.
“Cross boundary transfer requests for students outside of the Valour JK-12 School zone will not be granted for the French immersion program at Valour JK-12 School for JK-Grade 4,” Buffone said. “All students in the French immersion program at Herman Street PS will return to Valour JK-12 School in Grade 5 in order to continue the French immersion program.”
In French immersion, students learn French as a subject and French serves as the language of instruction in two or more other subjects. At the elementary level, at least 50 per cent of all instruction is provided in French. At the secondary level, academic and applied courses are offered for Grades 9 and 10; university preparation and open courses are offered for Grades 11 and 12.
In the French immersion program, students accumulate ten credits in French: four are FSL (French as a Second Language) language courses and six are other subjects in which French is the language of instruction. SUhler@postmedia.com
