Kings beaten by Nationals in OT
Pembroke’s goals scored by Brendan Browne and Casey Rhodes but regular seasons ends with a loss
Riding a high after an exciting 2-1 overtime win Friday night, the Lumber Kings had fate turn on them Sunday night as they were defeated 3-2 in overtime by the Rockland Nationals.
Rockland opened up the scoring in the first period with William Collins firing home an unassisted goal within the first eight minutes.
Thereafter, the penalty box saw more action than the scoreboard with the Kings displaying some frustration and aggression as they battled for the equalizer.
Neither team could capitalize on their power plays. The Lumber Kings missed out on their one opportunity while the Nationals fell short on four chances.
It wasn’t until the three-minute mark of the second period that the Lumber Kings’ Brendan Browne tied up the score (assisted by Peter Falivena and Matthew Barnaby).
With the game tied 1-1 heading into the third and final period it was the Nationals’ Trevor Coykendall who broke the tie at the five-minute mark (with assists from Connor Beatty and Raphael Gosselin) but two minutes later the Lumber Kings swiftly responded with their own goal from Casey Rhodes (assisted by Malcolm Arseneau and Connor Warnholtz).
Remaining a 2-2 tie by the end of the third period, the game headed into overtime during which both teams fervently battled it out on ice in an effort to be crowned the champions.
Despite the Lumber Kings’ best efforts, by 2:45 the Nationals’ Raphael Gosselin gained possession of the puck and made it count, giving his team the 3-2 overtime win.
Three stars: The first star was Nationals’ Raphael Gosselin, followed by Lumber Kings’ Jake Smith and the third star was Nationals’ William Collins.
