The Daily Press (Timmins) - - FRONT PAGE -

A flood warning has been issued for the Mattagami River in Timmins.

The Timmins Flood Advisory Committee issued a statement late Thursday afternoon and said there is a flood warning for the Mattagami River watershed, specifically for the Mattagami River in Timmins.

“A Flood Warning message serves as notification to the general public that localized flooding may occur. The committee reports that water levels on rivers and streams throughout the watershed continue to rise steadily in response to the recent rain,” said the statement.

“The exact extent of the flooding is difficult to predict at this time and will depend on the weather in the coming days. Over the next 24 hours low lying areas may experience nuisance flooding,” the advisory continued.

It was also revealed that this is not expected to affect specific city residents living in areas close to the river at this time, but things could change.

“No residences are expected to be impacted at this point in time. Everyone living in or near a flood hazard area is encouraged to monitor the conditions that are developing and to take the appropriate actions to protect their property,” said the committee statement.

The committee will continue to meet on a continuous basis over the next several days and provide regular updates. The general public is advised of these messages through the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority website (http://mrca.timmins.ca) with the flood status icon and a link to information about current conditions.
