Gold Kings top North Stars

Por­cu­pine ban­tams break game open late to se­cure ini­tial vic­tory at Ice Breaker event

The puck dropped on the 2018 Por­cu­pine Mi­nor Hockey As­so­ci­a­tion Ice Breaker Tour­na­ment at three are­nas across the city on Fri­day.

Ac­tion at the Carlo Cattarello Arena, the Whitney Arena and the McIn­tyre Arena fea­tures teams in Midget, Ban­tam, Pee­wee and Atom Di­vi­sions.

In the Ban­tam Divi­sion, the host Por­cu­pine Gold Kings got off to a good start — break­ing open a close game to thump the Tim­mins North Stars 6-1.

The con­test had been tied 1-1 head­ing into the third pe­riod, with Ni­cholas Cooper’s se­cond-pe­riod goal for the Gold Kings negat­ing a first-pe­riod power-play marker off the stick of Lo­gan Chooko­moolin for the North Stars.

Morghan Byrnes’ power-play marker with 7:22 re­main­ing in the third pe­riod set off a flurry of goals for the Gold Kings.

Bran­don Mal­ley, Ryker Naletto and Cooper then net­ted goals a minute and a half apart for the home side.

Byrnes added his se­cond of the day, with 1:49 re­main­ing on the clock, to close out the scor­ing and make the fi­nal score 6-1 in favour of the Gold Kings.

Justin An­drews went the dis­tance in net for the Gold Kings to earn the vic­tory, while North Stars goalie Joel Lapierre was tagged with the loss.

Things did not go quite so well for the host Por­cu­pine Gold Kings in the tour­na­ment’s Pee­wee Divi­sion, as they dropped an 8-3 de­ci­sion to the Tim­mins D&L Tow­ing North Stars.

Cameron Suther­land scored three goals to ig­nite the North Stars’ of­fence in that con­test, while Hunter Car­riere, Owen Car­riere, Steven John­ston, Daw­son Cyr and Tyler Poan each found the back of the net once.

The Gold Kings got goals off the sticks of Ian McLean, Bray­den Curley and Dalton Houde.

Nathan Mal­ley went the dis­tance in net for the North Stars to pick up the vic­tory, while Gold Kings goalie Hayleigh Piercey was tagged with the loss.

Mean­while, the day’s first con­test — an Atom Divi­sion tilt — saw the host Por­cu­pine Gold Kings knock off the Tim­mins Sling Choker North Stars 15-0.

Nathan Boucher scored three goals to power the Gold Kings at­tack, with Spencer John­ston, Hunter Weir and Dre Wheesk each adding a pair of goals.

Seth Boucher, Tanner Adams, Lacey Rivers, Pax­ton Morden, Mac Pi­etila and Evan Katic each chipped in with a goal, as well.

Jaret Fen­ton-Chy­pha went the dis­tance in net for the Gold Kings to record the shutout.

The Midget Divi­sion con­sists of the Por­cu­pine Gold Kings, the Tim­mins Fly­ers, the Schu­macher Cubs, the Ka­puskas­ing Ice Hawks, the New Liskeard Lions and the Powas­san Hawks.

In ad­di­tion to the Gold Kings and the North Stars, the Ban­tam Divi­sion also in­cludes the Cochrane Blues, the Chap­leau Huskies, the East Nipiss­ing Vipers, the Man­i­toulin Pan­thers and the El­liot Lake Wild­cats.

Teams in the Pee­wee Divi­sion in­clude the Gold Kings, the North Stars, the East Nipiss­ing Vipers, the Ka­puskas­ing Ice Hawks, the Temiskam­ing Shores Puck Hounds, the Hearst Lum­berKings, the Cochrane Riche­lieu Cubs, the Chap­leau Huskies and the El­liot Lake Wild­cats.

The Atom Divi­sion is made up of the Gold Kings, the North Stars, the Cochrane Knights, the Smooth Rock Falls Rock­ies, the Ka­puskas­ing Ice Hawks, the Iro­quois Falls McEwen Min­ing Eski­mos, the Temiskam­ing Shore Puck Hounds, the Man­i­toulin Pan­thers and the Chap­leau Huskies.

Round-robin ac­tion is sched­uled to con­tinue on Satur­day at all three fa­cil­i­ties, with games get­ting un­der­way at the the Carlo Cattarello Arena and the Whitney Arena at 8 a.m.and the McIn­tyre Arena at 10 a.m.
