Gold Kings top North Stars
Porcupine bantams break game open late to secure initial victory at Ice Breaker event
The puck dropped on the 2018 Porcupine Minor Hockey Association Ice Breaker Tournament at three arenas across the city on Friday.
Action at the Carlo Cattarello Arena, the Whitney Arena and the McIntyre Arena features teams in Midget, Bantam, Peewee and Atom Divisions.
In the Bantam Division, the host Porcupine Gold Kings got off to a good start — breaking open a close game to thump the Timmins North Stars 6-1.
The contest had been tied 1-1 heading into the third period, with Nicholas Cooper’s second-period goal for the Gold Kings negating a first-period power-play marker off the stick of Logan Chookomoolin for the North Stars.
Morghan Byrnes’ power-play marker with 7:22 remaining in the third period set off a flurry of goals for the Gold Kings.
Brandon Malley, Ryker Naletto and Cooper then netted goals a minute and a half apart for the home side.
Byrnes added his second of the day, with 1:49 remaining on the clock, to close out the scoring and make the final score 6-1 in favour of the Gold Kings.
Justin Andrews went the distance in net for the Gold Kings to earn the victory, while North Stars goalie Joel Lapierre was tagged with the loss.
Things did not go quite so well for the host Porcupine Gold Kings in the tournament’s Peewee Division, as they dropped an 8-3 decision to the Timmins D&L Towing North Stars.
Cameron Sutherland scored three goals to ignite the North Stars’ offence in that contest, while Hunter Carriere, Owen Carriere, Steven Johnston, Dawson Cyr and Tyler Poan each found the back of the net once.
The Gold Kings got goals off the sticks of Ian McLean, Brayden Curley and Dalton Houde.
Nathan Malley went the distance in net for the North Stars to pick up the victory, while Gold Kings goalie Hayleigh Piercey was tagged with the loss.
Meanwhile, the day’s first contest — an Atom Division tilt — saw the host Porcupine Gold Kings knock off the Timmins Sling Choker North Stars 15-0.
Nathan Boucher scored three goals to power the Gold Kings attack, with Spencer Johnston, Hunter Weir and Dre Wheesk each adding a pair of goals.
Seth Boucher, Tanner Adams, Lacey Rivers, Paxton Morden, Mac Pietila and Evan Katic each chipped in with a goal, as well.
Jaret Fenton-Chypha went the distance in net for the Gold Kings to record the shutout.
The Midget Division consists of the Porcupine Gold Kings, the Timmins Flyers, the Schumacher Cubs, the Kapuskasing Ice Hawks, the New Liskeard Lions and the Powassan Hawks.
In addition to the Gold Kings and the North Stars, the Bantam Division also includes the Cochrane Blues, the Chapleau Huskies, the East Nipissing Vipers, the Manitoulin Panthers and the Elliot Lake Wildcats.
Teams in the Peewee Division include the Gold Kings, the North Stars, the East Nipissing Vipers, the Kapuskasing Ice Hawks, the Temiskaming Shores Puck Hounds, the Hearst LumberKings, the Cochrane Richelieu Cubs, the Chapleau Huskies and the Elliot Lake Wildcats.
The Atom Division is made up of the Gold Kings, the North Stars, the Cochrane Knights, the Smooth Rock Falls Rockies, the Kapuskasing Ice Hawks, the Iroquois Falls McEwen Mining Eskimos, the Temiskaming Shore Puck Hounds, the Manitoulin Panthers and the Chapleau Huskies.
Round-robin action is scheduled to continue on Saturday at all three facilities, with games getting underway at the the Carlo Cattarello Arena and the Whitney Arena at 8 a.m.and the McIntyre Arena at 10 a.m.
