New Limburg brewery gets OK for expansion

A popular Norfolk brewery is adding a few new ingredients to its operation.

Norfolk County councillors unanimously approved a zoning amendment Tuesday last week permitting Nixon’s New Limburg Brewery to expand its operation.

The decision allows for a restaurant to be utilized at the facility, and the addition of a rear patio on the grounds. It also permits the land to be used for special events including concerts.

“I was very happy about it, it gives us also a little recognition that Norfolk County as councillors and mayor are happy to have us here,” said New Limburg cofounder Jo Geven. “(They’ve done) everything to get it done and in that sense, we are very happy that they’ve helped us to establish and grow within Norfolk.”

Now operating in its second year at the old Nixon Public School, New Limburg held a first-anniversary party last fall, which got staff thinking about an addition.

They’ll add another room to the building which allows them to host both private functions while the restaurant welcomes the public. A tasting room currently exists at the brewery, it offers small snacks along with its various styles of beer.

New Limburg will be permitted to host five special events per year from May through October.

Originally the GVN group representing the brewery applied to include camping on the grounds but rescinded that request when a neighbour filed a formal complaint.

“People are still (asking) ‘when do you have the next event?’ ... we have the space but we have to do it in the right way,” Geven said. “With the event field, people like it so we’ll try as fast as we can to get this going.”

Geven said he hopes the new patio will be operational by September 2018 and that food for the restaurant will be specifically chosen.

“The food will be something that pairs with our beer,” he added.

In a speech to council, Geven said that it’s not simply Norfolk County residents that are attending New Limburg. It’s not uncommon for folks to visit from places like London, Kitchener, and Hamilton among others.

Despite the plans to expand, Geven said he and his team won’t stray from their main passion.

“We are focused on the brewing part – first we are brewing,” he said.

“More and more people are coming, many from far away. Therefore we said ‘we have to grow’ because people like it and we see this as an add-on to our business and we want to keep the opportunities open. I always wanted to have a bar with a restaurant – we started as a brewery but I love this part also.”
