Residents now have a chance to indicate their preference for upgrades to the Drumheller Aquaplex.

This comes after an extensive consultation with users on what they would like to see in a facility upgrade.

Stantec Consulting, a company hired to provide engineering, consulting, and design services for the modernization of the Aquaplex, generated the data from the public survey that took place over a two week period in December.

On February 9, the Town placed renditions of four proposed designs at the Aquaplex for residents to select their preferences. Additionally, there is an online survey at www.dinosaurval allowing residents to provide feedback.

Some of the improvements the public have indicated they would like to see in the Aquaplex are change room updates and for the facility to be more 'kid' friendly. Some of the new facilities or services that you or your family would like to see in the future Aquaplex were a gradual entry, a kids/ toddler pool and a water park style facility.

Community response on the question regarding what was liked about the facility were the waterslide, hot tub, staff/ client relationships and having both indoor and outdoor pools. However, when asked what was NOT liked about the facility, the highest response was that the facility was old, dated and needed upgrading, followed by no toddler pool, no shallow gradual entry as well as the water slide restrictions and rules.

The responses for 'what additional programs would you

like to see in the future?', the top four were Zumba classes with more time slots, water polo, synchronized swimming club and scuba diving lessons.

When asked, 'what do you think about the existing programs offered?', the responses ranged from, not very good to it’s great to have so many programs available for every age group.

Based on the results, Stantec Consulting came up with some design ideas based on their assessment of the facility as well as the input generated from the surveys.

Town of Drumheller Director of Community Services Paul Salvatore, spoke with The Mail about the Aquaplex modernization. “At the Aquaplex, in the spectator area, there were copies of the drawings and options that were provided to us from Stantec Consulting. The drawings show the ways the pool could be laid out and until Tuesday, February 16, there was a survey for the public to comment Above is one of four designs proposed by Stantec for the renovations to the Drumheller Aquaplex. Residents can view and select their preference at the Drumheller Aquaplex or participate in an online survey at www.dinosaurval on, at the Aquaplex. From there, we’ll take that information, review it and report back to Town Council where things should go. A big part of that report will be how it fits in to the 2016 capital budget. We would love to start soon, but this is just the preliminary stage and there are too many variables to put out a hard date. We are looking at a number of differ- ent scenarios based on cost and availability of contractors.”

The Mail asked if the indoor pool would be closed during the summer for construction and Salvatore replied, “The majority of usage during the summer is at the outdoor pool. We are very lucky and are one of the few communities to have both an indoor and outdoor pool.”
