On Saturday, February 27, Drumheller Curling Club was filled with over 115 enthusiastic and determined curlers and coaches there to compete for the South Central Zone Curling Championships.

Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association (ASAA) four time Champions, Morrin Sr. High School girls rink, won their division title, after curling against Oyen’s South Central High School 11-0. South Central conceded the game, after four ends, and decided not to attend the Provincials. (Two rinks from the girls division were allowed to advance to Provincials) That decision gave the bronze medal rink from Sundre Sr. High School the opportunity to attend.

Delia Sr. High School boys rink won their division title, 10-1, against Calgary’s Holy Trinity from Calgary. “This is the first time, in quite a few years, that Delia will be rep- resenting the zone, so that’s pretty cool.” said coordinator Don Yavis, Principal at Morrin School.

The Mixed curling division winner was Crossfield’s W.G. Murdoch High School rink against the Carstairs/Olds team.

Yavis also said, “Great weekend, with 23 rinks, 8 Girls, 8 Boys and 7 Mixed, competing for their zone division title. Our area did very well. The winners will be going to Provincials starting next Thursday, March 3. Morrin girls will be defending their title.”

The teams will head to Ponoka and practice on Thursday, playing two games Friday and the playoffs will be Saturday. The ASAA Provincial Championships are being held at the Ponoka Curling Club.
