Sabres finish season with home tourney win
The St. Anthony’s Sabres junior varsity boy’s basketball team ended their season with a win at their home tourney.
The Sabres hosted a mini tournament last Friday at St. Anthony’s School. The team topped Banff and then Duchess to win the tournament.
Coach Joey Browning enjoyed his team’s performance.
The games certainly weren’t blowouts. In fact, the Sabres trailed Banff for most of their first game until they came alive in the fourth quarter to take a commanding lead.
Jhett Douglass was named game MVP versus Banff.
Versus Duchess, they stumbled out.

Browning took over the team midway through the season, and was impressed by the progress they made.
“They developed a lot quicker than I expected actually,” he said. “Our big guys came a long way, they all stepped up,” he said.
The Junior Varsity girls team also competed at the tournament. The Sabres won their first game versus Banff 31-14, but fell to Medicine Hat High with a score of 58-29.
“They’re really good. They are a 4A school,” said Makse. “I was happy we beat Banff. I knew we would have to play our best game. I told the girls when you play better teams like this you are going to improve. It’s a good challenge for us.”
This week the girls play Coronation on this coming Friday, and then host Zones on March 11 and 12. There are six teams competing.
