Hand Hills Grapevine

The Drumheller Mail - - FRONT PAGE - Marilyn Vredegoor 403-665-2473

Hello Hand Hills….Rain, the creek’s running, no snow and this is only March! Are we done with winter? I don’t think so. I am still waiting for winter as Mother Nature has the control button and we all know that she is very unpredictable.

She is adorable and cute as a button! I am talking about Cree Tatia Shadlock, baby daughter of Sam and Tamara Shadlock, of Cereal, Alberta. Grandpa Lawrence and Grandma Marge are going to have a lot of cuddles from this bundle of joy. Also Grandma Barb, from Cereal, is very excited as this is her first I believe. Congratulations from the Hills.

Jim Cruickshank proudly told me that he is now in the Great Grandparent Crowd. Granddaughter Ashley had a baby boy. Brett and Mariann Little are the proud grandparents. Ashley and her husband live on the Island so I foresee a trip to the coast for Jim and Shirley to see the new addition. Congratulations from the Hills!

If you are a gardener then this is for you. Verdant Valley Ag Society and Starland County are hosting a Jim Hole Horticultural Workshop Saturday, April 16, 2016 at the Verdant Valley Community Centre. Registration is a must and needs to be done by April 8. With this warm Spring like weather I am wanting to phone and register right now!

Hockey is still ongoing for many hockey crazy families in the Hills. Galsters’ and Bradys’ are gearing up for the boys to go to Provincial in Rimbey at the end of March, Vredgoors and Nelners have the Novice Team going into the third and final round of league play and Sierra Raugust and Tatum McCuaig are still in action this coming Saturday in Delia against the Hardy and Rosin boys.

I had the pleasure of going to the Skating Carnival in Drumheller this past Friday night. I was there to watch my 4 year old great nephew Finn Mills as he made his debut as a Shooting Star in his first ever Carnival. They did their best and they sure entertained the crowd. Also at the Carnival was Shelby Veno, daughter of Dwayne Veno. According to her Dad, Shelby skates five days a week, coaching and practicing her skills. I must say that all that time and effort she had put in showed as she performed her solos and took the young kids through their drills. The Hanna Carnival is coming up and Shelby also teaches the young kids there so you still have a chance to see her work her magic on the ice. Hats off to you Shelby for being so dedicated. Dwayne’s younger daughter (sorry I do not know her name) also skates in Hanna. What a busy family.

Are you ready to see what the addition and the renovations are looking like down at the Clubhouse? Then be sure to come on down on April 3 at 1 o’clock to investigate. We are having a “Work in Progress” Open House for everyone to view the new look. Please plan to attend.

Have you thought about your entry into the Parade for the 100th? Glenn Benedicit and Merle Morton are waiting to hear from you. Remember it happens on Saturday, June 4 at 10 o’clock!

Speaking of Merle, I know for a fact that he is one year older as of a couple of weeks ago. Roylene and Bill Bed- son were down from Cornation and there was a Birthday Supper at the Ranch. Roylene came to pick up a couple of the 100th Celebration Books and she spilled the beans! I am sure that along with the Birthday Celebration there was lots of work done in preparations for the upcoming Shiloh Cattle Company Bull Sale on March 26.

We are starting to put together a list of Volunteers that could help us out at the 100th. If you can spare a couple of hours on any of the days we sure would appreciate it. Phone me at 403-665 -2473 and I can put your name down. From selling souvenirs, to working in the booth, helping with the barbecues, the beer gardens, the dances, the Old Time Tent, the Parade and much much more, WE NEED YOUR HELP! Let’s do this up right.

There is a plan in place to revive an old Hand Hills Tradition this June. No it is not the 100th I am referring. Keep your eyes posted to this column as details will be coming in April!

Till next week…please send me your news .

This photo was taken 3 months ago and shows the fog on the power line that is just a couple of feet off of the barbed wire fence. Hand Hills had a lot of power outages during that time frame. Some were without power for three or four days. It has been 90 days since this picture, is that why we are having so much moisture?
