Verdant Valley Eye Opener
Jim and Toni Wilson made a fast trip to Slave Lake last week to visit Henry and Janet (Brown)Turner. They brought home a load of teepee poles and fence rails from Turner’s logging operation. The weather was beautiful and it was a very interesting and fun trip.
Plans are well underway for the Horticulture Workshop with Jim Hole of Edmonton as feature speaker. Jim Hole is Alberta’s top horticultural authority and the only Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture on the prairies. He has authored many books on the care of plants while conserving our environment. He is the son of Lois Hole and is a humorous, captivating, down to earth speaker. The workshop will be held on April 16 at the Verdant Valley Community Center, 15 km east of Drumheller on paved Hwy 576. Also on the day’s agenda in the morning is local natural history authority, Tim Schowalter speaking on attracting desirable bird, wild life and vegetation to your garden and yard. The full day starts at 10:30 am with Tim Schowalter, lunch at noon followed by Jim Hole from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. You may come for part or all of the day. Our community was well represented this weekend at two events. On Friday evening the Drumheller Skating Club held their wrap up carnival at the Drumheller Arena. The theme was Light Up The Night and was a great, colourful performance. Kassidy Powell was special guest skater. Tori James and Camryn and Elli-Anna McDougald were skating in the show. Well done all of you.
On Saturday, March 5 the Drumheller District 4H Public Speaking speak offs were held in Carbon. Taking part from our community were – In the Junior division – Camryn and Delaney McDougald. Camryn placed third overall. In Intermediate – Connor McDougald and in Senior Liam McDougald participated. Way to go you young folks! It is a great program that will be helpful to you all your life.
In case you wonder if our parents and young folks have a lot of time on their hands – listen to this weekend at the McDougald’s. Friday night, Skating Carnival. Saturday, 4H public speaking in Carbon, Saturday at 4:30 Liam McDougald played hockey in Red Deer, Saturday evening Brad and Koren take in the Johnny Reid concert in Red Deer and on Sunday Liam has tryouts for the Airdrie Raiders Football team. After tryouts and a two hour concussion testing, Liam made the team for the Spring Football League. Congratulations Liam. Wonder what you all do in your spare time!!
The monthly meeting of the Verdant Valley and Dorcas Women’s Institute will be held this Wednesday, March 9 at 7:30 at the home of Holly Guterson.
The March meeting of the Verdant Valley Ag Society Tuesday, March 22 at the Community Center at 7:00 pm.
