Ver­dant Val­ley Eye Opener

Jim and Toni Wil­son made a fast trip to Slave Lake last week to visit Henry and Janet (Brown)Turner. They brought home a load of teepee poles and fence rails from Turner’s log­ging op­er­a­tion. The weather was beau­ti­ful and it was a very in­ter­est­ing and fun trip.

Plans are well un­der­way for the Horticulture Work­shop with Jim Hole of Ed­mon­ton as fea­ture speaker. Jim Hole is Al­berta’s top hor­ti­cul­tural au­thor­ity and the only Cer­ti­fied Ar­borist with the In­ter­na­tional So­ci­ety of Ar­bori­cul­ture on the prairies. He has au­thored many books on the care of plants while con­serv­ing our en­vi­ron­ment. He is the son of Lois Hole and is a hu­mor­ous, cap­ti­vat­ing, down to earth speaker. The work­shop will be held on April 16 at the Ver­dant Val­ley Com­mu­nity Cen­ter, 15 km east of Drumheller on paved Hwy 576. Also on the day’s agenda in the morn­ing is lo­cal nat­u­ral his­tory au­thor­ity, Tim Schowal­ter speak­ing on at­tract­ing de­sir­able bird, wild life and veg­e­ta­tion to your gar­den and yard. The full day starts at 10:30 am with Tim Schowal­ter, lunch at noon fol­lowed by Jim Hole from 1:00 pm un­til 4:00 pm. You may come for part or all of the day. Pre Reg­is­tra­tion is es­sen­tial as we need to know how many to ex­pect for lunch. Please pr­ereg­is­ter with Pat at 403-3210210 or Toni at 403-321-0061. Our com­mu­nity was well rep­re­sented this week­end at two events. On Fri­day evening the Drumheller Skat­ing Club held their wrap up car­ni­val at the Drumheller Arena. The theme was Light Up The Night and was a great, colour­ful per­for­mance. Kas­sidy Pow­ell was spe­cial guest skater. Tori James and Cam­ryn and Elli-Anna McDougald were skat­ing in the show. Well done all of you.

On Satur­day, March 5 the Drumheller District 4H Pub­lic Speak­ing speak offs were held in Car­bon. Tak­ing part from our com­mu­nity were – In the Ju­nior divi­sion – Cam­ryn and De­laney McDougald. Cam­ryn placed third over­all. In In­ter­me­di­ate – Con­nor McDougald and in Se­nior Liam McDougald par­tic­i­pated. Way to go you young folks! It is a great pro­gram that will be help­ful to you all your life.

In case you won­der if our par­ents and young folks have a lot of time on their hands – lis­ten to this week­end at the McDougald’s. Fri­day night, Skat­ing Car­ni­val. Satur­day, 4H pub­lic speak­ing in Car­bon, Satur­day at 4:30 Liam McDougald played hockey in Red Deer, Satur­day evening Brad and Koren take in the Johnny Reid con­cert in Red Deer and on Sun­day Liam has try­outs for the Air­drie Raiders Foot­ball team. Af­ter try­outs and a two hour con­cus­sion test­ing, Liam made the team for the Spring Foot­ball League. Con­grat­u­la­tions Liam. Won­der what you all do in your spare time!!

The monthly meet­ing of the Ver­dant Val­ley and Dor­cas Women’s In­sti­tute will be held this Wed­nes­day, March 9 at 7:30 at the home of Holly Guter­son.

The March meet­ing of the Ver­dant Val­ley Ag So­ci­ety Tues­day, March 22 at the Com­mu­nity Cen­ter at 7:00 pm.
