The Ver­dant Val­ley and Dor­cas Women’s In­sti­tute held their April meet­ing on Wed­nes­day, April 13 at the home of Percy Poland with 10 mem­bers present. They com­pleted plans for the Knee­hill Con­stituency Con­fer­ence to be held in Trochu on Fri­day and Satur­day April 22 – 23. Del­e­gate for the con­fer­ence will be Ja­clyn Whit­more. Diana Rowe spoke about the Duke of Ed­in­bourgh Awards. The group is plan­ning to put an en­try in the Hand Hills Stam­pede pa­rade on June 4. The next meet­ing will be on Wed­nes­day, May 11 at the home of Holly Guter­son. The roll call will be a plant ex­change. The Al­berta Pro­vin­cial WI Con- fer­ence will be June 9 – 11 in Cam­rose.

Af­ter weeks of plan­ning and an­tic­i­pa­tion the Horticulture Work­shop was held on Satur­day, April 16 at the Ver­dant Val­ley Com­mu­nity Cen­ter with 115 at­tend­ing . It was a beau­ti­ful day for this event and the Ver­dant Val­ley Ag So­ci­ety was very pleased with the at­ten­dance. Tim Schowal­ter spoke in the morn­ing on the nat­u­ral his­tory of the area in­clud­ing the Hand Hills area. Lunch was catered to by Day Lenfesty and his vol­un­teers from the Hand Hills and was a de­li­cious beef on home­made buns with all the trim­mings. The af­ter­noon speaker was Jim Hole from Hole’s Green House in Ed­mon­ton or St Al­bert. He is a well-known Cer­ti­fied Aborist and Hor­ti­cul­tur­ist and spoke on “Gar­den Myths”. Th­ese are gen­er­ally held ideas about plants and gar­den­ing that are not based on fact. He then an­swered many ques­tions from the au­di­ence. The Ag So­ci­ety ap­pre­ci­ate the sup­port of the Star­land County for this event and also the sup­port of all the lo­cal news re­porters who pro­moted the event in their news col­umns. It was a very suc­cess­ful un­der­tak­ing.

Happy birth­day this week to Kas­sidy Pow­ell and Brent Grieve on April 21, Dale Wil­son on April 22, Marg Ewing and Blaine Leon­hardt on April 27.

Last week I sent best wishes on their wed­ding an­niver­sary to Eu­gene and Non­nie Don­ais on April 14 but I did not re­al­ize that it was a spe­cial an­niver­sary. Con­grat­u­la­tions on your 60th wed­ding an­niver­sary Gene and Non­nie Don­ais. Wish­ing you many more years of to­geth­er­ness.
