Dalum Dispatch

The Drumheller Mail - - SPOTLIGHT ON BUSINESS - Gerald and Maryann Rasmussen 403-823-2036

That terrible disease, cancer, has taken another valued member of our community. With no respect for his physical or personal strengths it stole Wagnar Learke from his family last Saturday. As was his wish, Wagner was able to remain at home as long as he could and spent only his last week in hospital at Strathmore. Funeral Services for Wagnar Learke will be held at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Dalum at 2:00 pm, on Wednesday, June 1. Our deepest sympathy is extended to Mariann and Vicki who, along with his many friends, mourn his passing.

The wet weather which arrived over the Victoria Day weekend prompted Wheatland County officials to lift the fire ban which had been in place during the previous dry spell. With more rain falling this week, the “wild fire” season which is usually part of the spring time transition from a brown to a green landscape is now unofficially over. While April showers bring May flowers it is May rain that brings the grain!

There was a good response by volunteers to cut the grass at the Dalum community center last Wednesday with some folks getting a good start on the work during the afternoon and several more completing the job that evening. Modern self-propelled mowers cover a lot of ground in a hurry and the edging trimmers do a nice job around buildings and cemetery monuments. While the equipment has changed since the days when a fleet of small mowers was used, the spirit of cooperation continues and the result is an attractive area which demonstrates care and respect for the face of our community.

For those who plan to attend the Friendship Club Spring Tea, this is a final reminder that it will take place at the Dalum Community Hall tomorrow, June 2, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon.

As happens from time to time, a quantity of tea tow- els and dish cloths seem to be missing from the community hall. Anyone who may have taken them home to be washed is asked to please return them or get in contact with a board member for pick up, as they are needed for upcoming functions. Your Board members are: Jerry Norman, Perry McMillan, Amy Poulsen, Pauline Pallesen, Jim Eskeland and Gerald Rasmussen.

Pauline Pallesen reports that if you have a cell phone which uses Telus as a provider and are experiencing “service” issues please contact Telus. They are wanting to hear from as many people as necessary in the area who are having phone issues. The Dalum area has been flagged as a trouble spot and the more input to the problem the sooner it will be addressed. So if you are experiencing problems like dropped calls, no service, emergency calling only, or no network connection, please let Telus know.

The Facebook page “Dalum Reunion 2018” which was recently created to raise awareness of the Dalum centennial celebration which will be held over the long weekend in August, 2018, is showing early interest with several views and “likes”. As preparations continue there will be more historical photos and notes posted as well as information pertaining to planning for the event. Birthday greetings this week go out to former Dalum folks Connie Gilroy (n. Pallesen), Gregg Jensen, Judy Walker (n. Rasmussen), and Roland Jensen.

It seems that too much of the news we get from television is bad and as someone recently opined: “They begin the evening news with ‘ Good Evening’, then proceed to tell you why it isn’t.”
