Constituency supports MLA following online comments
A Wildrose MLA whose online comments have gotten him kicked out of is caucus appears to be enjoying the support of his Constituency Association.
On Friday evening, the Wildrose Party released a three sentence statement from leader Brian Jean, announcing that Strathmore-Brooks MLA Derek Fildebrandt was suspended from the Wildrose Caucus.
“This evening, Mr. Fildebrandt made an unacceptable comment on social media that does not represent the values of the Wildrose Caucus.
“He has been suspended from our Caucus effective immediately,” stated Jean.
While it does not cite the comments, media have been drawn to one where it appears that Fildebrandt praised a statement from a Facebook commenter that ap- pears to be homophobic in nature.
Fildebrant has since given an explanation.
“I receive on average of 800 comments on my public Facebook page daily and I do my best to respond personally. As I’ve already stated publicly, I did not read a comment posted to my page by a constituent as carefully as I should have. If anyone felt that I shared those sentiments, I do not, and I apologize,” he said.
“My colleagues know that those views do not reflect my own opinion and they recognize that I made an honest mistake, so I was surprised by this decision. I accept this decision.”
His constituency Association supports his explanation and issued a statement
“Our MLA Derek Fildebrandt receives hundreds of Facebook comments each day on his page, and attempts to respond personally to them. He made an error in not reading one of those posts correctly, and we know this to be an honest mistake. We know Derek.”
Further, they are asking that his suspension be lifted.
“Our MLA Derek Fildebrandt has proven to work tirelessly for the people of Strathmore-Brooks, and for all Albertans. We un- equivocally support him as our elected Wildrose MLA,” it states.
“We are requesting the immediate return of our ELECTED MLA Derek Fildebrandt to the Wildrose Caucus, in his former capacity, and allow him to continue standing up for StrathmoreBrooks and ALL Albertans.”
Our MLA Derek Fildebrandt has proven to work tirelessly for the people of Strathmore-Brooks, and for all Albertans. We unequivocally support him as our elected Wildrose MLA.” Constituency Association statement
