U14 soccer team wins silver at districts
The Drumheller U14 Raptors Soccer team earned their way to the Big Country Soccer district finals and came home with a silver medal.
The U14s have been having a great season that culminated Friday night with a 6-0 win over Linden. This game was originally scheduled for the previous Tuesday, however because of a cancellation due to weather, the game was played on Friday. This win put them on an iron-man schedule as they travelled to Carstairs the next morning to be on the pitch by 8 a.m. for the semi final versus Irricana.
The Raptors played well versus Irricana and found them- selves up 3-0 at halftime. Irricana battled back to tie the game at 3, forcing a shoot out. Drumheller won.
This put them into the final versus Olds. They knew they were in tough as Olds has been undefeated all the way to the final.
Coach Martha Chambers said the Raptors played well and by half time, they were only down 1-nil. As the game played on however, the strain of playing three games in less than 25 hours took it toll.
“It was pretty tiring for our kids, I think by the second half of the third game, they were done”, said Chambers. “We started out well, and I thought we were going to keep it close, but we gradually just got tired, it got hard to dig deep.”
Olds took charge scoring four more. Despite this, Chambers is proud of her team earning the silver medal.
“It was great, I don’t remember the last time Drumheller ever did so well at zones. We were all excited,” she said. “It was a great weekend.”
Looking toward next year, more than half will be moving up to U16. This might work out well with a nucleus for both U14 and U16 team next season.
While she is happy with the results, she is also proud of how the players represented themselves.
“They were very sportsmanlike, which is more important than winning,” she said. “For coach Eric (Doucette) and me, that is really our goal.”
