Congratulations to the McDougald family who were awarded the BMO and Calgary Stampede Farm Family Award for Starland County on Monday, July 11 at the Calgary Stampede. Seventeen farm families from southern Alberta were recognized for sustainable farming practices and community involvement. This is the 20th year that this program has honoured farm families for commitment to community and agriculture. Attending the celebration brunch and presentation and the afternoon rodeo were Pat and Elson, Cliff and Chrissie, Connor and Delaney, David and Jaclyn, Brad and Koren, Raine, Liam, Camryn and Elli-Anna. The entire McDougald family is a very active and hardworking part of our Verdant Valley community and the Drumheller community. We appreciate their efforts.

What a busy ten days the Drumheller and District 4Hers and families have had this past week as they hosted ten 4H members and two chaperones from Oxford County, Ontario on an exchange trip. They arrived on Thursday, July 7 and two members and one chaperone stayed with Brad and Koren Mc- Dougald and family. The first day that they were here they visited the Blue Sky Hutterite Colony, the big Drumheller dinosaur and stopped at Rowley for pizza and a tour. They were required to do a service project as part of their trip so they painted tables at the Rumsey Agriplex and then toured the McNaughton Fish Farm. They spent two days in Banff doing all the tourist things and then did a local tour of the local Buffalo Farm, Morrin sod house and a cruise down the river in canoes and Kayaks. They took in the Calgary Stampede attending the rodeo and Grandstand Show. On July 13 they spent a family day at home and the next day toured Drumheller seeing the Hoo Doos, Atlas Coal Mine, Museum and Bleriot Ferry. They played a mud ballgame at Orkney and beach volleyball, swimming, hay rides and barbecue on their last day here. I don’t think they missed a thing! Drumheller and District 4H members and chaperones will be going to Oxford County, Ontario on July 25 and returning on August 3. Koren, Liam and Camryn McDougald will be part of that exchange trip.

July 8 – 10 Mick and Percy Poland accompanied by Gerri Shadlock attended the 50th wedding anniversary celebration for friends, Peter and Margaret Velichko in Edson. Peter and Margaret lived there for many years before moving to Drumheller ten years ago. Margaret then joined the Verdant Valley and Dorcas Women’s Institute. In May of this year they moved to Medicine Hat to be nearer family. Dave Daly and his band of Musicians provided music after a delicious supper for over 200 guests. Margaret and Peter will be missed in this community. We wish them the best in their new home.

Happy birthday this week to Jason Ewing on July 23, Mickey Poland on July 26, Fay Hnetka, Charli Anne Calon and Kimberly Polzin on July 27.
