A crowd of nearly seventy guests joined Edward and Carol Vogstad at their home near Sylvan Lake to help them celebrate their sixtieth wedding anniversary, last Thursday. Fine weather allowed for outdoor visiting with plenty of room for indoor activities in Edward’s nice shop. Among the guests were Edward’s twin brother, Edmund, and many friends who share a connection to their Dalum roots. Thanks to Connie Halliwell for providing the photo. Tina’s mother.

The Highway 56 paving job which included the grade entering the Red Deer River valley from the south as well as the section north of Drumheller extending to the Morrin corner has been completed and appears to be of good quality. The surface is smooth and even and the lumpy sections of the south hill have been eliminated. The modern “post and cable” system of guard rail has been used and the benefits of this system are stated to be less severe crashes and fewer injuries when contact does occur. The posts are designed to break and the cables flex, absorbing the energy of a crash and preventing the vehicle from bouncing back into the roadway. When the barrier has been damaged it can be repaired quickly and at a relatively low cost. Another benefit in winter months is that snow drifts do not form on the roadway as is the case with the solid metal panel rails.

Helen Leonhardt has sent a note informing us that the Verdant Valley Ag Society has another event coming up on Satur- day, August 13. A draft horse competition, an antique auto and machinery display, as well as music and a late afternoon supper are on the agenda. Those interested in attending may call Lyle at 403-820-6779 for more information.

The growing season continues and with the month of August the crops are entering the ripening stage. Blossoms are disappearing while many fields which were planted early are beginning to take on a golden hue. The hay crop is also plentiful this year but it is proving to be difficult to get it cut and baled between rain storms with some of the forage lost due to repeated soakings.

Birthday greetings this week go to a former Dalum lady, Ruth Murphy (n. Vogstad) and to my granddaughter, Arowyn Rasmussen; Happy Birthday, girls.
