A large crowd of friends and neighbors joined Don and Carol Ostergard at the Badlands Facility in Drumheller, last Saturday, when they hosted a party celebrating their fifty years of marriage. Guests included their wedding party of fifty years ago as well as several former employees who have been part of their very successful farming operation over the years. The recent improvement in the local weather conditions meant that some members of the farming community were not able to attend but messages of congratulations came from friends both present and absent. The “no speeches” request went unheeded as numerous tributes were paid to the couple and Don also spoke when he gave a very nice tribute to Carol. Flying has been a big part of their life together and he stated that there is no one who he would rather have as navigator and co-pilot than Carol. Ben Armstrong presented the couple a plaque of recognition from the County of Wheatland and the couple was also presented with the tradition Danish celebration cake, the “Kransekage”. Congratulations to Don and Carol and best wishes for many more golden years together.
There are two events coming up in November that Dalum folks are to be reminded of, the first being the Christmas Fair which will be held at the community hall on November 6 which, by the way, is the Sunday that Daylight Saving Time comes into effect, and the Remembrance Day service which will take place at the church on Friday, November 11. This is the tenth time that Gunnar Mortensen has organized the Remembrance Day service and he is once again pulling together all the details necessary to make it happen. Another item to keep in mind is that during the second week of November an episode of “War Junk” featuring Joan Snyder and Joy McKee will appear on the History Channel. The program will reveal to the sisters, and others who have been waiting for the episode to air, something about the activities of their father during World War II; I will try to get more details for next week.
It is a short column this week and with farmers back in the fields, doing their best to complete the harvest of 2016, we simply hope for enough sunny days to let them get it done.
