This fall, the Drumheller & Area ASSET Development Coalition developed and promoted the Youth Art Contest to students in Grades 3-12 in the Drumheller area. Students were encouraged to submit all types of art, not limited to traditional methods, but inclusive of things like original poetry or pieces of music.

The contest had an overarching theme of “Make the Most of You”, with open categories for how youth make the most of themselves, their family, and their community. As part of their sub- mission, students were asked to tell us the story of their journey to creating their art, sharing not only a description of their piece, but also their inspirations and learnings.

This initiative was done in partnership with our local Alberta Health Services Addiction & Mental Health team, in promotion of National Addictions Awareness Week, which occurs annually during the third week of November. The week aims to raise awareness about issues related to substance abuse and problem gambling, and to highlight how individuals can take steps to en- sure an addiction-free lifestyle for themselves and their families.

The coalition received entries from youth in Drumheller, Morrin, and Carbon, and those pieces have now been put on display at the Western GM Art Gallery for the first week of November (Nov. 1-7).

Youth artists from Drumheller, Morrin and Carbon participated in the Drumheller and Area ASSET Development Coalition’s “Make the Most of You” art contest.
