Drumheller Dragons split home stand
The Drumheller Dragons earned two of a possible four points over the weekend, holding tight to 8-8-3 record.
The Dragons played host to the Spruce Grove Saints on Friday night, November 4, but fell 5-0. They bounced back on Saturday night to top the Drayton Valley Thunder 4-1.
Friday night was the Jeff Hendricks Memorial game, an annual tradition and took to the ice in front of 514 fans. The Saints, who are currently third in the Viterra AJHL North, jumped out right away, and took a three-goal lead in the first period.
The Dragons put on the pressure in the second outshooting the Saints 13-6, but were unable to find the back of the net. Four minutes into the third period the Saints went up 4-0, and then capped off the game in the final second with an empty net goal.
On Saturday, November 5, the Dragons’ fortunes were brighter as they took on the Drayton Valley Thunder. Levi Johnson opened the scoring, assisted by Brady Risk and Bradley Stonnell, but the Thunder were able to tie the game to end the period.
The Thunder were unable to get one shot on net in the second period, and while the Dragons had 15, neither team scored.
A minute into the third Stonnell scored on the power play and less that 40 seconds later Cody Young put the Dragons up 3-1. One more goal came from Chad Hurtubise as the Dragons won 4-1.
The Dragons are on the road this weekend, playing Friday evening in Fort McMurray, and then Saturday in Lloydminster followed by a matinee Sunday versus the Bonnyville Pontiacs.
