Drumheller Dragons split home stand

The Drumheller Dragons earned two of a pos­si­ble four points over the week­end, hold­ing tight to 8-8-3 record.

The Dragons played host to the Spruce Grove Saints on Fri­day night, Novem­ber 4, but fell 5-0. They bounced back on Satur­day night to top the Dray­ton Val­ley Thun­der 4-1.

Fri­day night was the Jeff Hen­dricks Me­mo­rial game, an an­nual tra­di­tion and took to the ice in front of 514 fans. The Saints, who are cur­rently third in the Viterra AJHL North, jumped out right away, and took a three-goal lead in the first pe­riod.

The Dragons put on the pres­sure in the sec­ond out­shoot­ing the Saints 13-6, but were un­able to find the back of the net. Four min­utes into the third pe­riod the Saints went up 4-0, and then capped off the game in the fi­nal sec­ond with an empty net goal.

On Satur­day, Novem­ber 5, the Dragons’ for­tunes were brighter as they took on the Dray­ton Val­ley Thun­der. Levi Johnson opened the scor­ing, as­sisted by Brady Risk and Bradley Ston­nell, but the Thun­der were able to tie the game to end the pe­riod.

The Thun­der were un­able to get one shot on net in the sec­ond pe­riod, and while the Dragons had 15, nei­ther team scored.

A minute into the third Ston­nell scored on the power play and less that 40 sec­onds later Cody Young put the Dragons up 3-1. One more goal came from Chad Hur­tubise as the Dragons won 4-1.

The Dragons are on the road this week­end, play­ing Fri­day evening in Fort McMur­ray, and then Satur­day in Lloy­d­min­ster fol­lowed by a mati­nee Sun­day ver­sus the Bon­nyville Pon­ti­acs.

The Dragons fell 5-0 to the Spruce Grove Saints on Fri­day night but bounced back to de­feat the Dray- ton Val­ley Thun­der on Satur­day.
