Man sen­tenced for drug charges

A lo­cal man was given a two year sus­pended sen­tence after plead­ing guilty to pos­ses­sion of drugs.

Dustin Pow­ell ap­peared in pro­vin­cial court in Drumheller on Fri­day, Novem­ber 25.

He was fac­ing a num­ber of charges in­clud­ing pos­ses­sion for the pur­poses of traf­fick­ing dat­ing back to Septem­ber 28, 2014. He pleaded guilty to the lesser and in­cluded charge of sim­ple pos­ses­sion.

In the fall of 2014, po­lice were alerted to what ap­peared to be drug ac­tiv­ity at a lo­cal ho­tel. Sur­veil­lance was set up and po­lice were able to ob­tain a search war­rant for one room. Co­caine and 60 tablets of oxy­codone were dis­cov­ered and two in­di­vid­u­als were ar­rested. Pow­ell signed a statu­tory dec­la­ra­tion that the tablets were his.

He also pleaded guilty to sim­ple pos­ses­sion of half a gram of metham­phetamine dis­cov­ered at a traf­fic stop in Oc­to­ber 2015, and two breaches of re­cog­ni­zance for be­ing in pos­ses­sion of a cell phone and the pos­ses­sion or con­sump­tion of drugs.

He was given a two year sus­pended sen­tence that in­cludes com­mu­nity ser­vice.
