Man sentenced for drug charges
A local man was given a two year suspended sentence after pleading guilty to possession of drugs.
Dustin Powell appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, November 25.
He was facing a number of charges including possession for the purposes of trafficking dating back to September 28, 2014. He pleaded guilty to the lesser and included charge of simple possession.
In the fall of 2014, police were alerted to what appeared to be drug activity at a local hotel. Surveillance was set up and police were able to obtain a search warrant for one room. Cocaine and 60 tablets of oxycodone were discovered and two individuals were arrested. Powell signed a statutory declaration that the tablets were his.
He also pleaded guilty to simple possession of half a gram of methamphetamine discovered at a traffic stop in October 2015, and two breaches of recognizance for being in possession of a cell phone and the possession or consumption of drugs.
He was given a two year suspended sentence that includes community service.
