Family and friends helped Olav and Rita Pallesen celebrate sixty years of marriage by joining them for lunch at a Drumheller restaurant last Thursday. It appeared the surprise party was not much of a surprise to the couple as they were handsomely dressed for the occasion but Olav explained that he had just happened to put on his “Thursday suit” that morning. The couple married in 1956, five years after Olav arrived from Denmark to work on the farm of his uncle, Einar Paarup, where he got busy learning English as well as Canadian farming methods. With help to get started from Rita’s father, John Hansen, and blessed by the rewards which come with hard work and the opportunities available on the Canadian prairies, their farm is one of many in Dalum which continues to be operated by subsequent generations of the family. Olav and Rita are well known beyond the community of Dalum with Rita being a dedicated volunteer at the Drumheller Health Centre. Best wishes are sent to them by their many friends and acquaintances.
It is with the sadness that comes with the loss of a dear friend that I report the death of Erna Boe who recently marked her 97th birthday. On Sunday Erna was admitted to hospital in Drumheller and on Monday morning, January 2, she passed away after a long and well lived life. A funeral service for Erna will be held at the Bethlehem Lutheran church at Dalum at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 7.
A reminder to members of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church congregation that the Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 22. The meeting will be held following the Sunday service and Pot Luck lunch.
To all volunteers involved in the night gown project: the sewing bee, where all the pieces will be assembled, scheduled to take place in the Dalum Church basement this weekend has been re-scheduled for Saturday, January 14. Work will begin at about 9:00 in the morning.
The January 15 deadline for submitting Co-op till tapes is rapidly approaching and Rita Pallesen asks that anyone who has been saving them for the Friendship Club please get them to her as soon as possible.
Birthday greetings this week go out to Elena Eskeland, Kyle Suntjens, Paula Vogstad and Johnny Jensen who were all born near the beginning of the month. Elena was the “New Year Baby” in Drumheller when she was born, no word on whether any of the others hold such a distinction.
News from the community hall includes a lost and found notice regarding a ladies leather coat which was left in the basement sometime in November, the owner may contact Gerald Rasmussen for details. With the cold weather upon us the furnaces have been serviced and repaired but Dalum folks are still encouraged to watch for the low temperature alarm lights on the pump house and in the west
