Hello Hand Hills and welcome to 2017. Out with the old and in with the new… here is hoping that 2017 is a great year. Read somewhere that whatever the weather is 9 days after Christmas that is what we can expect for 5 weeks. It is holding true so far. Winter is here and it is cold.

I hope that you celebrated the New Year in style. The skating party held at the Delia Arena was a popular spot for some Hand Hills folks and they reported having a great time. Pat and Stan Hansen always seem to make sure of that.

A house warming/New Year’s Eve party was hosted by Kelby Stevens and Tenille Beaudoin. They have recently moved into the (late) Don and Merna Stevens house and so are permanent residents of Hand Hills/Delia. Welcome to this young couple and I hope that you celebrated this milestone and the New Year’s in style. It is so nice to have the next generation coming home.

Speaking of celebrations, the Griffith family surprised Keith with a 60th birthday party at the club on December 28. Keith was overwhelmed and was so touched that two communities; Cessford and the Hills; came together to celebrate with him. It was a good time with lots of visiting, good food and the young kids just had a blast. Here’s to many more Keith.

The kids are heading back to school. I hope that all enjoyed their holidays and are ready to take on the rest of the year. A big change is happening for the Hanna K-4 Students, as upon their return they will be in the Big JC Charyk School. The old Primary School will be demolished as it has served its’ time. Changes are a part of life.

2016 was a very busy year for the community here in the Hills. We lost some dear community members and we gained some new little ones. Our volunteers proved, over and over again, that we have the best in the world, with their dedication to our community.

2017 is shaping up to be busy as well. Not sure if we can top the 100th Stampede Celebration but Stampede 101 is on the planning block now.

The first item on the calendar is the Annual General Meeting slated for Thursday, January 26 at 7 p.m. Please plan to attend as there are lots of positions to fill and new faces are always welcome.

The Building Committee will be meeting this week and plans will be made to continue with the building renovations. We are hoping to complete most of them soon.

Plans are in the works for the Valentines’ Steak and Lobster Dinner and Dance on Saturday, February 11. Phone to reserve your table or your spot now. This will be a fundraiser for the new sound system and the building renovations. If you wish to donate an item to the live/ silent auctions please let us know. It would be appreciated. Last year’s auction was a huge success, let’s do it again.

The date for the Charity Sale has been changed to Friday, March 10. The Charity that will benefit from this event has yet to be decided but if anyone has any ideas please bring them to the meeting on Thursday, January 26. Also at this event changes to the parking at the Stampede will be addressed. The Best Ten Sites will be auctioned off at the Charity Sale. ( With proceeds going to further ground improvements not the charity) Watch for details and plan to attend.

Till next week…. Remember this is a new year, leave the past behind and start new!
