Dalum Dispatch

The Drumheller Mail - - NEWS - Gerald Rasmussen 403-823-2036

As a sad update to the recent mention of Audrey (Myrtle) Miller’s 89th birthday her sister-in-law, Gerda Sallows, reports her passing while in hospital in Amherst, Nova Scotia. Myrtle was pre-deceased by her husband, Carl, and is survived by their three children, Keir, Yvonne, Shane, and their families.

The Annual General Meeting of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church was held last Sunday afternoon and council President, Laurie Reiffenstein, reports that the election of officers included Barry Pallesen selected as Vice-President, Karen McMillan as Secretary and Eleanor Jensen as Council member.

It is the season for organizational meetings and others upcoming, although not yet scheduled, include the Annual General Meetings for the Dalum Community Hall Association and the Dalum Fire Protection Association. The committee organizing the Dalum centennial event will also meet in the near future.

While some of our neighbors have left the area on winter vacations others have returned, including the Jim and Julie Eskeland family, home from a family vacation at Walt Disney World in Florida. The Disney entertainment complex near Orlando opened in 1971 and was inspired by the original Disneyland which had been a great success since opening in Anaheim, California, in 1955. The Florida project became the flagship for Disney’s inter- national market and it is fantastic in its scope. Covering 43 square miles it includes 27 hotels, four theme parks, two water parks and several golf courses. With an annual attendance of 52 million people, it is visited by more guests than any other vacation destination in the world.

This week birthday greetings go to several former Dalum folks who all keep in touch with their country roots. They are Danielle (n. Vogstad) Chiurka, Joan Pallesen, Kevin Craig, Dixie (n. LaBerge) Mayell, and Dave Jorgensen. I also send belated birthday greetings to my daughter-inlaw, Sonia, who marked a significant birthday in the third week of January. She was born in the small town of Watrous, Saskatchewan where, almost a month into that new year, she still managed to be the New Year baby. Happy Birthday to all.

A reminder from Rita Pallesen that she is still collecting donations in memory of Erna Boe on behalf of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church

Get well wishes to Stella Jackson who continues to improve after her recent hip replacement and best wishes to Tom Madsen who has been a patient at the hospital in recent months

It did not take long for flies to emerge when the weather warmed up last week and the numerous bush bunnies which have taken up residence in my yard were having a much easier time foraging until four inches of snow covered the ground on Saturday night. Although we grumble when the really cold weather hits we should keep in mind that it does control certain pests like the pine beetle which caused so much damage to forests in B.C. and Alberta a few years ago.
