Fa­tal­ity In­quiry be­gins for two in­mates

A Fa­tal­ity In­quiry into the deaths of two in­mates on Christ­mas Eve in 2011 be­gan in a pro­vin­cial court­room in Drumheller Mon­day, Jan­uary 30.

On De­cem­ber 24, 2011, shortly af­ter 3 a.m., 24-year-old in­mate Ni­cholas Whynott was dis­cov­ered un­re­spon­sive in his cell. Cor­rec­tional of­fi­cers and staff ini­ti­ated med­i­cal treat­ments, EMS was dis­patched. He was pro­nounced dead at the Drumheller Health Cen­tre.

RCMP was dis­patched to the In­sti­tu­tion to in­ves­ti­gate and dur­ing that time 35-year-old Derek Up­ton was found to be un­re­spon­sive. He too later died at the Drumheller Health Cen­tre.

In April of 2012, The Drumheller Mail re­ported that both were dis­cov­ered to have had toxic lev­els of Fen­tanyl in their bod­ies. On De­cem­ber 16 of last year, a pre-in­quiry was com­pleted. The Fa­tal­ity In­quiry is sched­uled to run un­til Fe­bru­ary 1. Judge G.L. Gash­ler is to hear the In­quiry.
