Fatality Inquiry begins for two inmates
A Fatality Inquiry into the deaths of two inmates on Christmas Eve in 2011 began in a provincial courtroom in Drumheller Monday, January 30.
On December 24, 2011, shortly after 3 a.m., 24-year-old inmate Nicholas Whynott was discovered unresponsive in his cell. Correctional officers and staff initiated medical treatments, EMS was dispatched. He was pronounced dead at the Drumheller Health Centre.
RCMP was dispatched to the Institution to investigate and during that time 35-year-old Derek Upton was found to be unresponsive. He too later died at the Drumheller Health Centre.
In April of 2012, The Drumheller Mail reported that both were discovered to have had toxic levels of Fentanyl in their bodies. On December 16 of last year, a pre-inquiry was completed. The Fatality Inquiry is scheduled to run until February 1. Judge G.L. Gashler is to hear the Inquiry.
