Verdant Valley Eye Opener
Our sympathy to the Ewing families at the passing in Grand Prairie of Rose Ewing. Rose just celebrated her 95th birthday on January 20. She passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2017. Rose is mother of Fred Ewing, Tim and Marge Ewing, Dave and Susan Ewing, Louise Jingles and Shirley Martin and families. There are many grand, great and even great, great grandchildren as a legacy to Rose. Rose and husband Lewis farmed in the community for many years before their retirement. What an amazing woman and a lucky family to have her for so many years! Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
Some people must live right or are just lucky! When planning the Verdant Valley Ag Society Family Fun Day the committee faced the prospect of – no snow for the horse drawn sleigh rides and then after the snow came the weather was brutally cold. Well, Sunday, February 12 turned out to be a perfect day for this outdoor activity – Good snow cover and sunny and warm for mid-February. Nearly one hundred people enjoyed the day. Two teams of heavy horses, Chrome and Levi the Clydesdales, and Max and Destiny, owned by the McDougald family, were pulling two sleigh loads of happy children and adults all afternoon. The teamsters or drivers were Elson McDougald and Austin Veno and his family. Everyone gathered around a bonfire and roasted wieners and marsh mellows, drank hot chocolate and ate chips. The kitchen crew of Pat McDougald, Gerri Shadlock, Percy and Mickie Poland and Diana Rowe kept everyone fed and we enjoyed the music provided by Brian Fraser. It was a day to reminisce for older adults and for the children a new experience riding in a horse drawn sleigh. One tiny girl kept exclaiming – Look the horses are pulling me, the horses are pulling me! Another group of kids were singing Jingle Bells as they went around the yard. A very successful fun day enjoyed by all.
The next opportunity to see heavy horses in action will be the Chore Horse competition on July 29 at the Verdant Valley Community Center.
Happy birthday this week to Michael Duncalf on February 16 and Grayden and Morgan Ewing and Gage Poland on February 18.
