Dalum Dispatch

The Drumheller Mail - - CLASSIFIEDS - Gerald Rasmussen 403-823-2036

The native word “chinook” translates to “snow eater” and that definition was demonstrated very clearly by the strong westerly flow which blew through southern Alberta last week. For a couple of days it really felt like spring when ditches filled with water, the local streams were flowing and the Red Deer River broke in a few places with slabs of ice stacking up where snowmobiles had been travelling days before. Of course, there is still more winter to come but we are reaching the point where early signs of spring can appear and that includes the return, last week, of a pair of pigeons which are summer residents at the Rasmussen home.

The Board of directors for the Dalum Community Hall Association met last Thursday evening and included on the agenda was discussion regarding the Annual General Meeting. Wednesday, March 22 was selected as the date for the 2017 meeting and all those interested in the activities of the community hall, whether residents of the Dalum area or not, are encouraged to attend.

Get well wishes to Bob Nelson who continues to improve after his recent heart surgery, to Amy Poulsen who has a sore knee after a skiing mishap and to Owen Eskeland who has a sore shoulder, not from a hockey injury as we might expect, but as a result of a fall at a swimming pool.

Visitors to my home over the Family Day weekend were Bob and Charlotte Hedin of St. Paul, Alberta. Many folks in the Dalum and Standard districts will remember Bob and his brother, Ken, who joined the Rasmussen family when they became foster sons to Tom and Esther Schultz in 1964.

There is only one name on my birthday list this week and that is Marilyn Nielsen who was known as Miss Axelsen when she was a student at Dalum School. Happy birthday, Marilyn.

With less than a week remaining in February most of the documents required to complete personal income tax have arrived in the mail and the chore meeting the annual deadline begins. Two months seems like plenty of time to get it done but the government ads always remind us that as long as the return is post marked by midnight on April 30 we are not too late. In closing, a few words of internet wisdom which are good advice for all of us: “When you make a commitment you build hope; when you keep it you build trust”.
