A young Drumheller Woman is getting ready to take the stage next month to compete in Miss World Canada.

Michelle Sharrun, 20, is new to the pageant world, but she has already been accepted into the provincial competition coming up in Calgary on March 10-11.

“My mother was a model and members of my dad’s family have a lot of modeling experience, so I kind of wanted to try it out,” said Sharrun. “It is called ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ so it is about helping your community and in turn the whole world.”

She explains that Miss World is one of the longest running pageants, created in 1951.

Miss World has raised millions of dollars for children’s charities and has franchises in hundreds of counties Miss World Canada was established in 1957, and the winner of the national pageant goes on to the international contest.

Many of the contestants have gone on to careers in all kinds of fields, from entertainment to law. The most famous could be Priyanka Chopra, Miss World 2000. She became a Bollywood star and is now the star of ABC’s Quantico and has won two People’s’ Choice Awards. She will be in the movie remake of Baywatch alongside Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson.

For Sharrun, the first step is the provincial contest. The Drumheller native explains she has already interviewed with the pageant judges and was selected to compete. One of the main criteria was her service to the community.

She said this is an introductory pageant and the first day they will be assisting the contestants in learning the skills needed to succeed.

“It teaches you how to do it and then on March 11 we can compete in our first pageant,” she said.

The winners of the provincial pageants go on to the national contest.
