Dragons end regular season with win
The Drumheller Dragons ended the regular season with a win Saturday night in Olds.
The Dragons, battling injuries and a shake-up in its leadership, went on an eight-game losing streak down the homestretch of the season. On Saturday, March 4, they broke the slide with a 6-3 win over the Grizzlys.
The Dragons jumped out in front less than three minutes into the game with a goal from Yauheni Astrouski. The Grizzlys tied it up a minute later, but Cody Young put the Dragons up 2-1 to end the first.
In the second period Olds tied it up on the power play at the 7:21 mark. The Dragons answered back with goals from Joren Patenaude, and then Levi Glassman on the power play to put the Dragons up 4-2. Olds answered back to end the second 4-3.
That was as close as the Grizzlys would get as Jordan Taupert made it 5-2 and Cody Young scored his second of the game on an empty net to win 6-3.
The team hopes to continue their momentum from Saturday night’s win into the playoffs.
The Drumheller Dragons’ sixth place finish means they will be going up against the number 3 ranked Calgary Canucks, in the first round.
Game 1 of the five-game series is this Thursday, March 9, on the road at the Max Bell Arena in Calgary, and game two is on Friday. Game 3 is back at the Drumheller Memorial Arena Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
