Greet­ings & Sa­lu­ta­tions! Here’s what’s new this week in the Stan­dard Com­mu­nity…

This year the Al­berta Fish and Game As­so­ci­a­tion pre­sented Phil Faubion with their Gerry Gibson Me­mo­rial Award. This award is pre­sented to the club or in­di­vid­ual that has done an out­stand­ing job teach­ing out­door ed­u­ca­tion pro­grams in Al­berta. Phil spends his time ev­ery sum­mer at the AHEIA (Al­berta Hunter Ed­u­ca­tion In­struc­tors As­so­ci­a­tion) camp at Al­ford Lake teach­ing kids Al­berta Hunter Ed­u­ca­tion and Fire Arms Safety cour­ses. Con­grat­u­la­tions and well done!

Sev­eral Stan­dard fire­fight­ers at­tended Wheat­land County’s 2nd An­nual Vol­un­teer Fire­fight­ers Ap­pre­ci­a­tion Evening, an event which hon­ors lo­cal fire­fight­ers with Years of Ser­vice awards. Spe­cial pre­sen­ta­tions were made to those with 5,10,15,25 years of ser­vice with a 40 Years of Ser­vice award pre­sented to our own Deputy Chief Mal­colm McKin­non. The Stan­dard Vol­un­teer Fire As­so­ci­a­tion has a com­bined to­tal of 235 years of ser­vice, with 1060 com­bined years of ser­vice county wide. Thank you to our Stan­dard Vol­un­teer Fire­fight­ers, our he­roes who save more than homes, they save lives, hearts, mem­o­ries and dreams.

Can­vass­ing is now get­ting un­der­way for the 2017 Com­mu­nity Chest, a reg­is­tered so­ci­ety with the Prov­ince of Al­berta. A Di­rec­tor will be call­ing for your con­tri­bu­tion dur­ing the months of March and April, and a tax re­ceipt will be is­sued. This year’s goal is to raise $25,000. When con­tribut­ing, you are wel­come to choose any or­ga­ni­za­tion on the list your Di­rec­tor will pro­vide you with, or, you can pro­vide the name of any or­ga­ni­za­tion you would like to do­nate to. Many choose the Com­mu­nity Chest to make their an­nual do­na­tions to the causes that they hold dear to their heart. Your Com­mu­nity Chest dol­lars stay as close to the lo­cal com­mu­nity as is pos­si­ble. One cause to con­sider is the Stan­dard Tem­po­rary Aid Fund, avail­able con­fi­den­tially to Com­mu­nity Mem­bers who are strug­gling due to ex­treme fi­nan­cial and/ or health is­sues. Thank you for your con­tin­ued sup­port of the Com­mu­nity Chest!

The Fig­ure Skat­ing Club is hav­ing their an­nual Car­ni­val on Sun­day March 19th. It starts at 1:00pm. They are hav­ing a raf­fle ta­ble, bake sale and 50/50 draw. Come out and show your sup­port!

Please note the an­nual Lions ( Mm­m­mmm) Steak Fry sup­per fundraiser has been changed to March 31 in­stead of March 17.

The Kitchen at the Stan­dard/Rose­bud Arena will be clos­ing for the sea­son on Sun­day, March 19. The staff would like to ex­tend their grat­i­tude for all the sup­port they have re­ceived dur­ing this past sea­son, and are look­ing for­ward to re­turn­ing in Oc­to­ber to kick off the 2017 sea­son.

The Nazareth Lutheran Church in­vites you to their “Soup Sun­day” event on March 26 fol­low­ing wor­ship, at 10:30 am. A free will of­fer­ing is be­ing taken up to sup­port the Nazareth Church Women’s var­i­ous min­istries. March is the sea­son of lent, a time for self-re­flec­tion, alms-giv­ing, and fast­ing, there­fore there will not be a “Son-Shine Satur­day”.

PLAY BALL!!! It’s not too late to sign up for this year’s base­ball sea­son. So far there will be t-ball (2-4), rally cap (5-7), rookie (8-9), and mos­quito (10-11) teams. Five have signed up for pee­wee (12-13) but to make a team, more play­ers are re­quired. Please mes­sage Cindy Collins via Face Book or email stan­dard­ball@hot­ for a reg­is­tra­tion form.

Ev­ery Satur­day at the Stan­dard Mu­nic­i­pal Li­brary there is a Wii & Board Games Day. Kids age 8 Year and up (younger ones be­ing ac­com­pa­nied by an adult or older re­spon­si­ble sib­ling) are in­vited to get their game on from 11 – 2 pm. Play Wii, foos­ball, mouse­trap, twister and more. This is a drop-in pro­gram open to all. All pro­grams of­fered at the Li­brary are free, mem­ber­ship not re­quired, but as al­ways, en­cour­aged.
