Greetings & Salutations! Here’s what’s new this week in the Standard Community…
Condolences to the family of Lillian Castella. She passed away Feb 26, 2017. A memorial service will be held at the Standard Community Hall on April 24 at 3 pm. There is a collection box at the Standard Co-op in her memory with donations going to support the Memory Lane project.
Do you ever wonder why they call it a turkey in bowling? One legend says it began as a thanksgiving tradition in the 1800s. The first person who bowled three strikes in a row during the week of Thanksgiving (or Christmas, depending on who you ask) would get a live turkey to take home for dinner. Darren Larsen has had another successful year bowling in the annual BowlaRama on March 18. He would like to send out his many thanks to all who sponsored him. Way to go Darren!
The Wheatland Crossing School grad class of 2017 is holding a bottle drive fundraiser. Any amount you can give would be greatly appreciated. If you have bottles, let them know and they will come by and pick them up Sunday, April 2.
Have you heard? A new group has popped up in the community! The Standard Walk & Run Club is here for you. They meet at the Standard School Track, Sunday mornings at 8:30 am. Is fitness a goal for you “in the long run?” You might be a veteran runner, a medal junkie, or just someone who’d like to join others for motivation, camaraderie, and fun. It is open to all ages, so fitness can “run in your family!” Questions you may be asking yourself, can I start at a walk? Absolutely. Can I join anytime? Yes! Choose your own training schedule for the week and your pace and goal for the day. A free Learn2Run 5k 10-week program schedule will be available for anyone interested, and will finish in time for the summer race season. Note: To have time to complete the Learn2Run training, you will need to start on March 26 or April 2. Check out the club’s Fb page for more info.
The annual Seniors St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon hosted by the Standard Lionettes was held on, Friday, March 17 and saw an enjoyable afternoon with good friends and good food. The senior’s raised $1315.00 through a live auction and donations with the proceeds going to the Palliative Care Center. Until next year, may your troubles be less, and your blessings be more and nothing but happiness come through your door!
A note from the Village of Standard. In regards to the speeding and stunting happening in and around the Village, law enforcement has been out and tickets have been issued, however racing and stunting continues to be a major safety concern. The Village has requested zero tolerance for anyone caught speeding, racing, and stunting. Enforcement will be out frequently and this kind of activity will not be tolerated. If you see anyone driving recklessly, or excessively speeding, please note a description of the vehicle and driver, and a license plate number. If you can take pictures or a video that would be even better. Contact the RCMP immediately! Tickets can be issued if witnesses are willing to write and sign a statement and provide a description of the vehicle. By working together as a community, we can put a stop to this kind of dangerous behavior and keep our community safe!
