Verdant Valley Eye Opener
The first annual Alberta Women’s Institute District Five Convention was held in Trochu Community Hall on Saturday, April 22 and was an enjoyable and memorable success. District Five stretches from Sundre in the west to Cessford in the east of central Alberta and is composed of four constituencies. There were six WI branches in attendance. On Friday 385 entries in handicraft, baking, photography and plants were judged by five judges who included local judges Elsie Garson, Helen Leonhardt and Joy McKee. Congratulations to Pat McDougald of the Verdant Valley and Dorcas Women’s Institute who won first place in Home Economics (Baking) with 23 entries. The convention on Saturday was attended by local members Pat McDougald, Percy Poland, Bailey Holtheyson, Gerri Shadlock, Diana Rowe, Doris Wade and Jaclyn Whitmore. The convention was honoured to have Mr. Mel Foat as a presenter. Mr. Foat was accompanied by his wife Gwen and his Guide Dog and Companion, Walker. Mr. Foat spoke about the challenges, adjustment and blessings that resulted from losing his sight unexpectedly in 2013. He moved all who attended with his faith, strength and resolve. The Trochu Agricultural Society and the Cottonwood Gordon Agricultural Society helped sponsor the convention and the members and executive of District Five who worked hard to bring this event to a successful conclusion. Hats off to all these volunteers.
Happy birthday this week to Marg Ewing and Blaine Leonhardt on April 27, Sandra (Shadlock) Martynes on April 29, Fred Ewing on April 30 and Marilyn Thomas on May 3.
