DGSA ready for Provincials
Provincials are to be held on July 7, 8, 9 with the last of the home games for the season on Monday, June 26.
“There will always be action on the diamonds for practicing five days a week,” said Kent Jensen, DGSA board president.
Jensen is proud of the progress the girls have made over the season.
“All of these girls have done a wonderful job. There was a lot of them who had never played before and they’ve all picked up on it real quick,” said Jensen.
The U16 team played in Stettler and won first in the consolation side of the tournament from June 16 to 18 and are now headed to Leduc for provincials after a few more games.
“I haven’t seen all the scores but I think they’ve been doing really well,” said Jensen.
The U14 teams are now joining into one as everyone has busy schedules and the same goes for the U12’s. With that being said, the U14’s are headed to Leduc for their provincial tournament and the U12’s are in Stettler.
Softball Alberta has made an executive decision to allow all teams to participate in Provincials this year to open up new venues for hosting purposes.
“That was Softball Alberta’s thing this year - to find hosts big enough to handle all the teams that entered so we wouldn’t have to play downs,” said Jensen. “They wanted everybody to go to provincials.” Each team has to prove they can enter their specific divi- sion of provincials with score sheets which are sent to Softball Alberta to be approved beforehand.
Softball Alberta has now changed the system so no one team will be the clear winner, ultimately allowing everyone to play in their specific level for fair competition.
“Before you could have an A team in the D division and clean house and then keep doing it – Now you have to prove you are playing where you’re playing,” said Jensen.
“It makes it a lot easier on everybody in the long run.”
