Well, the week­end was hot and beau­ti­ful and t he S ports D ays a h uge suc cess t hanks t o all t he won­der­ful volun teers who made it hap­pen. Also, thank you to the teams that ven­tured down to our lit­tle c om­mu­nity t o en joy a f un week­end of ball. We had 15 teams join us on t he we ek­end. The A fi­nal c om­pe­ti­tion w as pla yed off be­tween ‘ H ere c omes t he R uns’ man­aged by K ory Br emer and Randy Schofer and ‘ Swingers and Dingers’ a team from Stet­tler and BV play­ers man­aged by Dilon.

Hous­ton. I t w as a c lose rac e with Swingers and Dingers c om­ing ahead in the run count to take home the big prize.

In the B fi­nal, ‘Rel­a­tively Good’ a long stand­ing team to our tour­na­ment made up of t he St een fam­ily and clo se f riends vers ed ‘Bench­warm­ers’ a team of young­sters f rom El­nora and T rochu man­aged by C at­rina Craig , who I he ard is S andy Craig ’s g rand­daugh­ter s o tie s t o R um­sey a s well. In t he fi­nal c ount, B ench­warm­ers pulle d ahe ad by only 2 runs t o w in the B e vent s o c on­grat­u­la­tions to them. In the C fi- nal, we had one of our lo­cal teams who had slugge d their w ay f rom the b ot­tom of t he dra w she et back in to t he C fi­nal 6 g ames later, ‘ Titts­berg Feel­ers’ man­aged by our dra wmas­ter J ackie Watts come up against a Red Deer team, ‘Al­cobal­ics’, man­age d by Me lissa Ed­wards and her da ughter, w ith the Alc obal­ics pulling ahe ad in the end to win the C event. Ev­ery­one had a great time with beau­ti­ful weather, fun events, good food and good ball.

Our lo cal men ’s f ast­ball t eam was also busy this week­end play­ing in D el­burne a t t heir L eague Play-off tour­na­ment. They played their w ay in to t he S emi-Fi­nals against Bluffton on Sun­day morn­ing but lo st t here w ith Bluff ton go­ing onto the fi­nal to take home the big prize. So maybe it is a good enough c on­so­la­tion t o not e t hat they did chal­lenge the champs.

I would like t o send out a big wel­come f rom all of R um­sey t o the new­est mem­ber of our c om­mu­nity, Cole Thoma s Neme tz, born t o S aman­tha and Bran­don Nemetz on S atur­day, J uly 15. Jim and St ephanie R ich­mond and Char­lie and W in­nie Nemetz couldn’t b e ha ppier w ith t heir new ad­di­tion t o t heir f am­i­lies. Con­grat­u­la­tions to ev­ery­one.

It is with sad­ness that I ex­tend on t he ne ws of Ir ene S torch’s pass­ing on July 11. It was dou­bly hard on t he St orch/Heck f am­ily as t hey wer e pr epar­ing f or L yle and Char lotte H eck’s f ather’s fu­neral, F rank H eck, who had passed away on July 2 and who se fu­neral w as he ld t hat same d ay. Charlotte Heck is Ir ene’s da ughter. I haven’t re­ceived news of the fu­neral date but hope­fully will be able to in­form you in next weeks’ col­umn.

The next event on the Rum­sey Com­mu­nity Cal­en­dar will be the S.T.A.R.S ride down at the TL Bar ranch on Sun­day, Au­gust 13 start­ing at 9:00 am. It’s not too late to get your ple dge sheet started for this g reat c ause th at w e i n th e coun­try r eally de pend on. I t’s a fun d ay of r id­ing in t he b eau­ti­ful coulees of the Red Deer River Val­ley so if you ha ve a hors e and need an ex­cuse to ride this is the event to sign up for.
