Well, the weekend was hot and beautiful and t he S ports D ays a h uge suc cess t hanks t o all t he wonderful volun teers who made it happen. Also, thank you to the teams that ventured down to our little c ommunity t o en joy a f un weekend of ball. We had 15 teams join us on t he we ekend. The A final c ompetition w as pla yed off between ‘ H ere c omes t he R uns’ managed by K ory Br emer and Randy Schofer and ‘ Swingers and Dingers’ a team from Stettler and BV players managed by Dilon.
Houston. I t w as a c lose rac e with Swingers and Dingers c oming ahead in the run count to take home the big prize.
In the B final, ‘Relatively Good’ a long standing team to our tournament made up of t he St een family and clo se f riends vers ed ‘Benchwarmers’ a team of youngsters f rom Elnora and T rochu managed by C atrina Craig , who I he ard is S andy Craig ’s g randdaughter s o tie s t o R umsey a s well. In t he final c ount, B enchwarmers pulle d ahe ad by only 2 runs t o w in the B e vent s o c ongratulations to them. In the C fi- nal, we had one of our local teams who had slugge d their w ay f rom the b ottom of t he dra w she et back in to t he C final 6 g ames later, ‘ Tittsberg Feelers’ managed by our dra wmaster J ackie Watts come up against a Red Deer team, ‘Alcobalics’, manage d by Me lissa Edwards and her da ughter, w ith the Alc obalics pulling ahe ad in the end to win the C event. Everyone had a great time with beautiful weather, fun events, good food and good ball.
Our lo cal men ’s f astball t eam was also busy this weekend playing in D elburne a t t heir L eague Play-off tournament. They played their w ay in to t he S emi-Finals against Bluffton on Sunday morning but lo st t here w ith Bluff ton going onto the final to take home the big prize. So maybe it is a good enough c onsolation t o not e t hat they did challenge the champs.
I would like t o send out a big welcome f rom all of R umsey t o the newest member of our c ommunity, Cole Thoma s Neme tz, born t o S amantha and Brandon Nemetz on S aturday, J uly 15. Jim and St ephanie R ichmond and Charlie and W innie Nemetz couldn’t b e ha ppier w ith t heir new addition t o t heir f amilies. Congratulations to everyone.
It is with sadness that I extend on t he ne ws of Ir ene S torch’s passing on July 11. It was doubly hard on t he St orch/Heck f amily as t hey wer e pr eparing f or L yle and Char lotte H eck’s f ather’s funeral, F rank H eck, who had passed away on July 2 and who se funeral w as he ld t hat same d ay. Charlotte Heck is Ir ene’s da ughter. I haven’t received news of the funeral date but hopefully will be able to inform you in next weeks’ column.
The next event on the Rumsey Community Calendar will be the S.T.A.R.S ride down at the TL Bar ranch on Sunday, August 13 starting at 9:00 am. It’s not too late to get your ple dge sheet started for this g reat c ause th at w e i n th e country r eally de pend on. I t’s a fun d ay of r iding in t he b eautiful coulees of the Red Deer River Valley so if you ha ve a hors e and need an excuse to ride this is the event to sign up for.
Here a couple giggles for you: “The divor ce ra te amoung st m y socks is a stonishing!” And “I’ ve notice t hat s quirrels ar e b eginning to gather nuts for the winter. A couple of m y friends are missing! Are you in a safe place?”
