It is just a brief report from Dalum this week where the crops which showed such promise a month ago are now suffering from lack of moisture. The storm which blew through the area on Sunday evening did bring some rain but by most reports it amounted to less than half an inch; too little, too late for some of the crops. On the bright side, it has been a good year for hay with enough moisture early in the summer and excellent conditions for cutting and baling in recent weeks.
Included on the long list of charitable and non-profit organizations which make use of funding provided by volunteering workers to help at casinos sanctioned by the Alberta Liquor and Gaming Commission is Big Country Victims Services where Judy Nelson is the manager and last weekend a few Dalum folks were part of the crew which took a turn at the Century Casino in Calgary. The Dalum Community Hall Association and the Dalum Fire Protection Association also make use of this form of fundraising with the Fire Protection Association scheduled for an event early next year, something for volunteers to keep in mind.
I stopped in at the beautiful Rosedale home of Kaj and Doreen Guldberg last weekend while they were holding a garage sale and learned that they, too, had recent visitors from Denmark when friends from Calgary escorted the travellers to the Drumheller valley as part of a Canadian vacation.
The Pallesen family made a trip south to the Doyle farm at Fort MacLeod last weekend when they attended the baptism of their newest family member, Ali Doyle.
I have spent a bit more time reviewing the tape recorded interviews of several Dalum pioneers which were conducted by Ellen Nygaard in 1973 and each one holds interesting and personal remembrances of the early days in our community. It has been suggested that family members might purchase the digitally mastered recordings from the Provincial archives and share them by way of “listening stations” at the Dalum centennial celebration which will take place just over a year from now and Ellen has taken on the task of contacting surviving family members to coordinate that part of the activities. A variety of displays and activities are planned and they will be located at the church, the community hall and the fire hall.
Rita Pallesen sends a reminder that she is still accepting donations to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Dalum in memory of the late Svend Andersen. Donations may also be directed to the Calgary Health Trust in care of Care West Colonel Belcher, 1939 Veterans Way, Calgary Alberta, T3B 5Y8, with a note including your name and phone number.
Birthday greetings this week go to Carol Vogstad and her daughter-in-law, Tresa; to Jamie Paarup; and to Lanny Holmen and his sister, Rhonda Espegren. I also find my own name on the list and look forward to spending the day with my children and grandchildren.
