The Drumheller Mail - - CLASSIFIEDS - Patty Steen 403-368-3820

I know I typically start with a line or two about the weather because it is ultimately the most important part of our farming culture but this week I think everyone is thinking and praying for the same thing – rain, rain and more rain. The upside to all this extreme dry hot weather is the haying has been going beautifully.

I have been remiss in listing the birthdays from June and July at St. Mary’s Lodge over in Trochu. In June, Pat Holowath was hostess at the Lodge and they celebrated 5 birthdays. In the Lodge, Adeline Guynup, Marie Ellement and Beryl Gelinas celebrated their special day. In extended care, Maxine Meding and Margaret Stanbievech were also celebrating. In July, Kendra Kiemele was the hostess and she presented gifts to Watson Reed in Extended Care and Agnes Greig in the Lodge. Congratulations to all those special people. Dariel McNaughton will be the hostess for the birthday club in August.

There is happy news in the Sorsensen household these days as Melita ( Walgenbach) and Chad along with little Nash welcomed a beautiful baby girl into the world on July 17. Temperance Louise arrived a little early weighing in at 7 lbs, 10 ozs, but all is well and the family couldn’t be happier. Melita Walgenbach lived in our community and curled with Betty Primrose and others in all our bonspiels. She teaches in Big Valley when she is not busy with babies. Congratulations, everyone.

One of our fellow columnists asked me to pass this event news onto you, the Verdant Valley Draft horse Competition is set for Saturday, July 29, starting at noon. This event is held 15 km east of Drumheller on Hwy 576 at the Community Center. There will be fun activities for the kids, displays and exhibits, an antique auto and machinery display, live music along with the draft horse competition. There will be a concession all day along with a Beef on a Bun Supper available so make sure you mark your calendars for next Saturday’s fun events.

As for Rumsey events, the S.T.A.R.S Ride is fast approaching with plenty to do there. Sunday, August 13 starting at 9:00 am you need to be down at the TL Bar Ranch for breakfast courtesy of the Rumsey firemen then set out on a beautiful ride through the river valley for a few hours. If you are not a rider then there is a silent auction, raffle, lunch, live music and good visiting to enjoy while the riders are gone. Once they are back, there will be a supper available to all the community so come and enjoy a good meal. There is a minimum pledge requirement of $20 for each rider to go on the ride but remember what a good cause this is and collect as much as you can. Hope to see you there.

Have a great week, everyone.
