The Dr umheller Stingers , pee­wee b oys b ase­ball t eam headed t o pr ovin­cials la st week­end and came home with a sil­ver medal.

The t eam qual­i­fie d f or t he cham­pi­onship t our­na­ment and earned a sp ot in Tier 1 of like sized com­mu­ni­ties.

They he aded t o Trochu f or the play­offs.

Coach L yle C aw­iezel said the Stingers ma tched up in pool play ver­sus Trochu, Clive and D aw­son Cr eek. H e said the com­pe­ti­tion was very well matched and they had to go to a tie break­ing for­mula to de­ter­mine the rank­ing. Drumheller made it to the semi­fi­nals.

There, t hey f aced West­lock and cruised to a 14-12 win.

“It was a close game and to­wards the end we k ind of held on and it wen t down to the fi­nal out,” said Caw­iezel.

This w in put t hem in to t he cham­pi­onship versu s T rochu. The Stingers k new t hey wer e in tough as they faced them in the qual­i­fy­ing tour­na­ment.

“Trochu is a r eally go od team, they are solid and wen t un­de­feated through the whole pro­vin­cial t our­na­ment,” said Caw­iezel. “We k new we wer e go­ing t o b e in t ough and t he boys bat­tled re­ally hard, but in the end, it was over for us.” Trochu won 15-6.

“Trochu is a r eally good hit­ting team and they have pitch­ers that are re­ally tough to hit off,” H e said. “We ne ver g ave up and we tr ied t o ke ep up with t hem but t hey wer e just too tough.”

This w as a g reat fini sh f or the Stingers, and Caw­iezel said it ha s b een quit e s ome time since they fielded a pr ovin­cial team.

“It was their first kick at pro­vin­cial b all, and t hey fig ured it out and did r eally we ll,” he said.
