Stingers win silver at provincials
The Dr umheller Stingers , peewee b oys b aseball t eam headed t o pr ovincials la st weekend and came home with a silver medal.
The t eam qualifie d f or t he championship t ournament and earned a sp ot in Tier 1 of like sized communities.
They he aded t o Trochu f or the playoffs.
Coach L yle C awiezel said the Stingers ma tched up in pool play versus Trochu, Clive and D awson Cr eek. H e said the competition was very well matched and they had to go to a tie breaking formula to determine the ranking. Drumheller made it to the semifinals.
There, t hey f aced Westlock and cruised to a 14-12 win.
“It was a close game and towards the end we k ind of held on and it wen t down to the final out,” said Cawiezel.
This w in put t hem in to t he championship versu s T rochu. The Stingers k new t hey wer e in tough as they faced them in the qualifying tournament.
“Trochu is a r eally go od team, they are solid and wen t undefeated through the whole provincial t ournament,” said Cawiezel. “We k new we wer e going t o b e in t ough and t he boys battled really hard, but in the end, it was over for us.” Trochu won 15-6.
“Trochu is a r eally good hitting team and they have pitchers that are really tough to hit off,” H e said. “We ne ver g ave up and we tr ied t o ke ep up with t hem but t hey wer e just too tough.”
This w as a g reat fini sh f or the Stingers, and Cawiezel said it ha s b een quit e s ome time since they fielded a pr ovincial team.
“It was their first kick at provincial b all, and t hey fig ured it out and did r eally we ll,” he said.
