The Big Val­ley Mu­nic­i­pal Li­brary kicked off their 2017 Sum­mer Read­ing Pro­gram on Tues­day, Au­gust 8 with a Robert Mun­sch Day which in­cluded games and ac­tiv­i­ties in­spired by this Cana­dian au­thor’s cre­ative sto­ries. This year the Big Val­ley pro­gram will run ev­ery Tues­day, Wed­nes­day and Thurs­day through­out the month of Au­gust be­gin­ning at 2:30 p.m. Li­brary staff will en­gage area chil­dren in games, crafts, ac­tiv­i­ties and awe­some sto­ries all cel­e­brat­ing Canada to fill the rest of the sum­mer with fun and read­ing. Ev­ery­one is wel­come. Chil­dren un­der 5 must be ac­com­pa­nied by an adult. The Big Val­ley United Church will be hold­ing their first ser­vice af­ter their reg­u­lar sum­mer break next Sun­day, Au­gust 13 at 11:00 a.m. Ev­ery­one is wel­come.

The next meet­ing of the Big Val­ley His­tor­i­cal So­ci­ety will be at 7:00 p.m. on Tues­day, Au­gust 15 at the Big Val­ley Train Sta­tion. The so­ci­ety meets ev­ery third Tues­day of the month for their reg­u­lar meet­ings and wel­come any­one in­ter­ested in the his­tory and preser­va­tion of Big Val­ley and area to join them.

Mark your cal­en­dars and make plans to at­tend the 14th an­nual Al­berta Free-Mo model train ex­trav­a­ganza. Com­ing to the Big Val­ley Agriplex on the week­end of Au­gust 19 and 20, this event, or­ga­nized by the Cal­gary Free-Mo Club was, in 2007, the largest of its type in North Amer­ica and has been a re­mark­able event ever since. Each year model train en­thu­si­asts cre­ate and op­er­ate more than 350 feet of bench work, with metic­u­lously de­tailed scenery al­ter­nat­ing be­tween prairie scenes, moun­tain vis­tas and cityscapes, and cover­ing al­most the en­tire sur­face of the Big Val­ley arena. Join us in Big Val­ley to check out this ex­tra­or­di­nary fam­ily friendly event.

Big Val­ley Le­gion­naires have been in­vited to join the B Squadron – 14th Cana­dian Army Tank Reg­i­ment (Cal­gary Tanks) for a re­mem­brance cel­e­bra­tion of the 75th An­niver­sary of Dieppe “Op­er­a­tion Ju­bilee” to be held on Sat­ur­day, Aug. 19 at the Stet­tler Royal Cana­dian Le­gion. The day will be­gin at 10:30 a.m. with a pa­rade to Sharpe’s Me­mo­rial Park and in­clude open­ing cer­e­monies and a wreath lay­ing ser­vice and a Dieppe “Op­er­a­tion Ju­bilee” ex­hibit ded­i­ca­tion.

The McKen­zie Cross­ing Camp­ground will be closed from Au­gust 17 to 21. There will be no camp­ing or ac­cess to the river dur­ing these days. Apolo­gies for any in­con­ve­nience.
