With the exception of a shower which passed through the Dalum area on Sunday evening, moistening the fields, harvest conditions have been good and work is progressing well. Bins which were emptied of last year’s crop over the past several months are now being refilled as the annual cycle repeats itself.
The Dalum fire crew has been called to several small fires related to harvest operations in Dalum and neighboring communities but Mike Ostergard reports that all were contained quickly with very little loss of crops or serious damage to equipment. When we see the fire trucks heading out to a field fire we should keep in mind that most of the firefighters are other farmers who have left their own fields to go to the aid of their neighbors, well done volunteers! It is also important to remember that as we travel our country roads remain aware of the large equipment which we may meet beyond the next hilltop; slow down and stay safe.
It is more than seventy-one years since the Friendship Club was organized and over that time its members have been active in community and charitable activities. In recent years the number of ladies answering roll call has declined but there are still a few who are willing and able to continue and, as has been their tradition, the August meeting consisted of a social outing; this year it was a group of three who attended Rosebud Theatre for lunch and a show.
Pastor Dan and Paula Hendrickson are home from a vacation which included a stop at Fernie where they were able to do some grand parenting before making their way to the west coast where they visited Pastor Dan’s mother, sisters, and others.
Stella Jackson had a houseful last weekend when she hosted a family reunion of thirty three children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren from Lac La Biche, Rocky Mountain House, Calgary, and Drumheller. Adding to the festivities was the thirtieth birthday of one grandson and the engagement of another.
With the Dalum centennial event less than a year away interest is building and many have wondered what they might expect when they return to Dalum next August. At the community hall there will be historical displays which will include, among other things, a collection of aerial photos of farm sites and a “hands on” mapping project where visitors may identify which families lived at various locations in the district at different times. The hall basement will be the location of a “non-stop coffee break” where names and faces may be reacquainted because one of the goals of the organizing committee is to ensure that the celebration is a reunion of those who are returning to Dalum from the many places they have made their homes. It is also hoped that the ball diamond will be put to use in recognition of the many teams which have used it over the years. At the church there will be a video presentation playing on the large t.v. screen and in some quiet place, perhaps the parish education wing, visitors will be able to listen to the interviews of several Dalum pioneers which were recorded by Ellen Nygaard in 1973. It is very likely that the cemetery will be visited by many of the visitors and one popular idea is that of identifying some of the early community builders with information placards by their gravesites. On Saturday evening, August 4, there will be a banquet in the new fire hall and one of the next priorities of the committee is to create a pre-registration form and begin the process of identifying who, and how many, will attend that part of the weekend event. As planning continues, those interested in keeping in touch electronically may access the Facebook site, Dalum Reunion 2018, or make use of the email account Dalum100@ outlook.com.
Birthday greetings this week go to three former Dalum residents, Grant Christensen, Marilee Allerdings (n. Vogstad), and Bruce Rasmussen; best wishes to all.
In closing, an interesting thought concerning happiness by Arnold Schwarzenegger: “Having more money doesn’t make you happier. I have fifty million dollars and I am just as happy as when I had forty eight million.”
