Drumheller Dragons open sea­son Fri­day at home

The Dragons showed con­tin­u­ous im­prove­ment as they bat­tled their way through the pre­sea­son, and are now set for their home opener this Fri­day. The Dragons hosted the Olds Griz­zly son Wed­nes­day, Septem­ber 6, and won 5-3 push­ing their pre­sea­son record to 4-0 and out scor­ing their op­po­nents 25-15.

On Fri­day night, Septem­ber 8, they hosted the Brooks Ban­dits and then trav­elled to Brooks on Sun­day for am­ati nee game. Th­ese games were a lot closer as the Dragons won Fri­day 3-2, but f ell 5-4 in over­time Sun­day.

They ended the pre­sea­son 5-1. Coach Kevin Has se lberg say she like the p rog- ress the team has made.

“You have to learn to be a good team in all sit ua­tions, and this last game in Brooks was a sit ua­tion t hat s erved our t eam ver y we ll and we are e xtremely ha ppy w ith the re­sults mov­ing for­ward even t hough we didn ’t end up on t he r ight side of t he score sheet.

We le arned a lot a bout each ot her and s ome­thing to build on mov ing f or­ward,” said Has­sel­berg.

Drumheller has a long his­tory w ith th e B rooks B an­dits, and t his g ame s erved as a st art­ing p oint f or t he team in its pro­gres­sion.

“We f eel t hat an y of our play­ers c an c om­pete w ith any­body now, and it is just about ge tting b et­ter e very sin­gle day,” said Has­sel­berg. “That is our goal and that is what we w ant t o do, and I know the play­ers are build­ing for that as well and e xcited to be a part of that.”

The Dragons of­fi­cially open the reg­u­lar sea­son this Fri­day a t home ver­sus t he Cam­rose Ko­di­aks. For Has­sel­berg, he w ants his t eam to fo­cus on the ba­sics.

“The g ame is s o sim ple, we just ha ve t o mak e sur e we are play­ing hard con­sis­tently over t he full 60 min­utes of t he g ame, and we are play­ing on the right side of the puck,” he said. The se are two t hings we ar e r eally fo­cused on r ight now. I know the play­ers are go­ing to wor k har d t his we ek in prac­tice and t he c oach­ing staff is go­ing t o be work­ing just a s hard. Our goal is t o be bet­ter than our last game and I k now our g uys ar e ready to do that.”

Brady Risk has a chance last Wed­nes­day ver­sus the Olds Griz­zlys. The Dragons fin­ished the pre­sea­son with a 5-1 record and open the reg­u­lar sea­son this Fri­day ver­sus the Cam­rose Ko­di­aks.
