Di­nosaur Valley Half Marathon en­joys strong at­ten­dance

Af­ter eight years, the Di­nosaur Valley Half Marathon con­tin­ues to buck the trend with strong at­ten­dance.

The an­nual road race, which fea­tures the Fam­ily 5 K Walk and Run, the En­can a 10 K and the Half Marathon went Sun­day morn­ing, Septem­ber 10. It was an­other great year and go­ing into the race, event chair Mor­gan Syvert­sen said their reg­is­tra­tion was the high­est ever for the half marathon.

“We had 156 sig ned up,” Syvert­sen told the “Mail”. There were 109 sig ned up for the 10K and 166 sig ned up for the 5 K Fam­ily Fun Run. Once again, McDon­ald’s in Drum hell er of­fered free reg­is­tra­tion for the fam­ily run and 55 took ad­van­tage of the op­por­tu­nity. Syvert­sen said there was a healthy crowd of walk-ups that signed up for the race. McDon­ald’s was also on site with its McCafe trailer and Fre­son Bros. had a bar­be­cue for race rs. There was also face paint­ing and mass ages, mak­ing a fes­tive at­mos­phere for the ath­letes.

The weather co op­er­ated beau­ti­fully a s smok e-free blue skies were abound with vir­tu­ally no wind.

“That (smok e) w as a real c on­cern, t here wer e some peo­ple who said t hey weren’t go­ing t o rac e,” said Syvert­sen.

He is grate­ful for the strong volun teer supp ort that did e very­thing f rom man­ning aid st ations t o work­ing as course mar­shalls and rib­bon pre­sen­ters.

He w as ver y ha ppy w ith the race. This ye ar the pro­ceeds f rom t he rac es wen t to­wards the Cana­dian Bad­lands A quatic Club and mem­bers of t he swim team were on t he c ourse, man­ning an aid sta­tion.

The over­all w in­ner of t he 21K race was Jef­frey Ni­col of Leth­bridge and Nick Sereda had t he t op lo cal time. In the 10K , J ack­son F rantz of Cal­gary w as t he t op fin­isher, and Cam Mor­ri­son of Drumheller fin­ishe d t hird. In the 5K , Er ik Amwl­inckx fin­ished first , and t he t op Drumheller fin­isher w as Bray­don Ber­dahl. Kate Mes­som of Drumheller was the top plac­ing f emale w ith a blis­ter­ing 24:01 time.
