Zariski named Golf Canada Vol­un­teer of the Year

Lo­cal duff er and Dr umheller town coun­cil­lor Tom Zariski ha s le arned t hat he will be named the 2017 Vol­un­teer of t he Year by G olf Canada.

Zariski is c ur­rently t he pres­i­dent of Alb erta G olf and is ac ting pr es­i­dent of the Alb erta G olf F oun­da­tion. He has vol­un­teered for many ye ars pr omot­ing t he sport lo cally and t hrough- out the prov­ince.

“Con­sid­er­ing all of these golf or­ga­ni­za­tions are manned pre­dom­i­nantly w ith volun teers, who spend hun­dreds of hours vol­un­teer­ing in many dif­fer­ent ca­pac­i­ties, to be sin­gled out as the re­cip­i­ent for the award for 2017 is a h uge hon­our ,” said Zariski. “When I lo ok at all of these other vol­un­teers who do great things, it is a sig nif­i­cant hon­our to be rec­og­nized.”

Lo­cally, Zariski has served as a board mem­ber at Di­nosaur Trail Golf Club, serv­ing on v ar­i­ous c om­mit­tees. H e also started the Drumheller Golf A sso­ci­a­tion, a non­profit so­ci­ety and many will re­mem­ber his wor k pr omot­ing the Na­tional Golf in School pr ogram, wher e he pre­sented st arter golf k its to the area schools. He was also a part of Clubs for Kids where he c ol­lected sp are clubs t o distr ibute t o t hose who w ish t o pla y, r emov­ing t he b ar­rier of ne ed­ing equip­ment.

“To t his da y, I still ha ve peo­ple a sk­ing, ‘ do you still need s ome golf club laughs.

He ha s b een a memb er of Al­berta Golf for 12 ye ars and a dir ec­tor for 10 ye ars. His pas­sion is a s a golf r ef­eree and he offic iates about a do zen c om­pe­ti­tions e ach year f or b oth G olf C anada and Al­berta Golf.

He is also on the Golf Canada r ules com­mit­tee. There is a go od chance he w ill b e of­fi­ci­at­ing a t the C P Women’s O pen, an L PGA Tour tour­na­ments in Regina.

“That is my main role as a rules of­fi­cial. Man y p eo­ple don’t know, to be an of­fi­cial for golf, you are a vol­un­teer,” he said. The award will be pre­sented a t t he G olf C anada AGM in C algary, J an­uary 25-27. This is t he 12th year that G olf C anada ha s pr es­ented t he a ward and c an­di­dates ar e put f or­ward f or con­sid­er­a­tion by t heir pr ovin­cial golf as­so­ci­a­tions. s?’” he
