Low income earners have more options than realized

The Drumheller Mail - - NEWS -

Sandstone Manor offers 6 one bedroom units and 14 two bedroom units. Sandstone Manor is located on 10th Avenue S.E. and was built in 2009.

Larger family units with three and four bedrooms are located in Greentree. The 26 unit Greentree site is located on 1.3 acres. These units were built in 1967.

“Those [family units] are about a block away from Greentree School which is very convenient for those families and they are located behind Extra Foods which is nice as well,” continued Houston. “It’s good for families to be close to those amenities. They can walk their kids to school and to the grocery store so it makes it a lot easier for them.”

All properties managed by DHA are professionally maintained and are professionally cleaned and painted between tenancies.

Currently, 5 units are available; 3 family dedicated units and 2 single parent or small family units. The large family units are constructed to have three or four bedrooms and one bathroom whereas the smaller units have two bedrooms and one bathroom. Each applicant will be given the unit that suits their lifestyle or number of occupants.

Houston indicated that many who have used the program have expressed their appreciation for the level of comfort the program provides.

“I believe this is a good program. Basing rent on income stops the worry of families who otherwise may have had to choose between rent or groceries,” said Houston.

Anyone interested in this program can contact the Drumheller Housing Administration at rent@2121.ca or 403-823-2121. The DHA’s office is located at 145 3rd Avenue West in Downtown Drumheller.

“We encourage anyone to come in to the office and fill out an application,” said Houston. “We can help them if they have any questions about it.”

“Even if we don’t have the unit size open that they require, they can go onto the waitlist. It could be a variable time limit on the waitlist but you can’t get a unit if you don’t have an application in, so that is the very first step,” said Houston.
