The Drumheller Mail - - AROUND TOWN - Helen Leonhardt 403-823-9823

We have some news to catch up on for the Verdant Valley and Dorcas Women’s Institute. At their September meeting Town Counsellor Tom Zariski spoke to the group about the troubled relationship between Alberta’s legal drinking age of 18 and grade 12 students finishing High School education. Member Diana Rowe has been an advocate for women’s rights to the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission which has resulted in some changes in provincial legislation that suc- cessfully helped women and men. At the October meeting on October 10 held at the Verdant Valley Community Center eight members and four visitors were present. A display cabinet was obtained and placed in the Verdant Valley Hall. It will be filled with Women’s Institute historical items depicting 106 years of giving, caring and learning for home, community and country. A donation of $100 was given to the Morgan Jayne protect. Guests at the meeting were WI District 5 Director Linda Toews with some of her family from Bowden and Linda Mason of Spruce View, District 5 Secretary and FWI Executive Officer. Linda Toews presented the Verdant Valley branch with a WI Canada flag. WI Canada is the new name for the organization that used to be called Federated Women’s Institute of Canada. The District 5 Conference will be held April 25 and 26, 2019. A decision regarding holding this conference at the Verdant Valley Community Center will be finalized at a District 5 meeting in December but the conference will probably be held at the Verdant Valley Center with the Verdant Valley and Dorcas Women’s Institute hosting. Roll Call was an exchange of home canning or baking.

The weather seems to have turned around and we are all hoping to get harvest underway. That doesn’t need to stop us from having a good turkey supper at Munson on Thursday, October 18, Morrin on Wednesday, October 24 and Hand Hills on Sunday, October 28. Sounds like a great plan. I can never get too much turkey!
