Assumption wins tourney
St. John’s College recently hosted a successful sixth annual All Catholic Girls High School Soccer Championship tournament.
Organized by Jeff De Prosperis, Jason Young, Rich Melski, Andrew Hall and Peter Pomponio, the tournament featured 12 teams, with an all-local final as Assumption College defeated SJC.
After round-robin play, teams were ranked for playoffs. In the final, following a 0-0 draw, ACS beat SJC 5-4 on penalty kicks.
During the tournament, a mass was held at St. Pius X Parish followed by a dinner banquet at SJC catered by Mercasa Banquet Services (chef Tom Mercante) and Jen Svec (culinary teacher at SJC).
During the banquet, one member from each participating team received a “Living in Faith” award. There were also many door prizes.
For the sixth straight year, Bank of Montreal (Martha De Prosperis – commercial manager for Simcoe/Waterford) was the main sponsor. Many other sponsors and volunteers helped, including: Knights of Columbus Brant and Brantford Girls and Boys CYO; SJC Culinary and Hospitality Program (for banquet setUp); Father Andrew Czarny from St. Pius for mass, Sean Adams for cantering, and SJC chaplain Andrew Hall with the worship band for music at mass; Mr. Pomponio for support (SJC’s athletic director); keynote speaker at banquet, Lisa Bijman, SJC alumni of girls soccer and former Division I soccer player of Maine University; Steven Penner for program and graphic design support; Andrew Pilkington, referee organizer; Mary Ann Blunt at the City of Brantford; Anna Spagnuolo, secretary of SJC; SJC principal Greg Picone; and Chris Roehrig, director of Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board.
Each team donated canned goods and non-perishable food items to St. Vincent De Paul.
