Ea­gles are again ju­nior bas­ket­ball cham­pi­ons

The St. John’s Col­lege Green Ea­gles played scrappy de­fence and found their shoot­ing touch to win the Brant County ju­nior high school girls’ cham­pi­onship on Fri­day.

The Green Ea­gles de­feated the Brant­ford Col­le­giate Mus­tangs 63-40 in Game 3 of their best-ofthree se­ries.

“We were a lit­tle up­set with how we played last night,” said Lau­ren Mar­cos of the Green Ea­gles 35-32 loss on Thurs­day in Game 2. “But we’re a team of war­riors and we showed it tonight.

“Our de­fence was flaw­less and our shoot­ing was amaz­ing.”

Mar­cos fin­ished Game 3 with 31 points and led all scor­ers with a ter­rific per­for­mance.

In the first quar­ter, the Green Ea­gles took the lead with a tena­cious full-court press, which forced a lot of turnovers which they con­verted to points. The three-point shoot­ing which helped them with game one but dis­ap­peared in game two came back in the open­ing quar­ter of game three.

Mar­cos scored 15 points in the first quar­ter, in­clud­ing nine from three-point range to help the Green Ea­gles take an early lead. Lau­ren Overeem and Reilly Tay­lor each scored five in the first quar­ter to give the Green Ea­gles a 23-11.

How­ever, in the sec­ond quar­ter the Mus­tangs fared bet­ter, scor­ing 10 points to six for the Green Ea­gles. The Mus­tangs were led by Kaia Grant who scored five points in the quar­ter on top of the four points she scored in the first quar­ter.

The Green Ea­gles found their touch again in the third quar­ter when Mar­cos score 13 points, in­clud­ing six from three-point range. Tay­lor scored eight points in the third, in­clud­ing six from be­yond the three-point line.

At the end of three quar­ters, the Green Ea­gles led 53- 34.

Tay­lor fin­ished the game with 18 points.

By the time the fourth quar­ter started the game was pretty much over and the Green Ea­gles cruised to their sec­ond con­sec­u­tive cham­pi­onship.

The Mus­tangs got strong per­for­mances from Grant, who fin­ished the game with nine points. Tatum Gravett scored nine for the Mus­tangs and Mon­tanna Ainsworth had six

The Green Ea­gles ad­vance to Cen­tral West­ern On­tario Sec­ondary Schools As­so­ci­a­tion tour­na­ment, which will be played in Kitch­ener start­ing Fri­day.
