Terry Fox runs
Making a difference in the fight against cancer
Get those running shoes laced up and ready – it’s time once again to get out there and run to defeat cancer.
“I’m really looking forward to another amazing year surrounded by the greatest people,” said LisaMarie Gow, founder and organizer of the Terry Fox Run for TLTI. “We have lots of things planned for our Run this year.”
Run date is September 17 this year, with registration at 8 a.m. and the Run itself starting at 9 a.m. at Fox Run By the River on the Thousand Islands Parkway.
Gananoque is also holding its annual Terry Fox Fun on the 17.
“I have some reminder points for this year’s Gananoque Run for you,” said Lisa Bird, new coordinator of the Gananoque Terry Fox Run. “Registration begins at 9:00am at the Town Park with healthy food choices to enjoy before heading out. The Lions Club Members will have a water/ coffee/t-shirt sales station set up, and Pre- Run ceremonies begin at 9:45am. The Run itself starts at 10 a.m.
“There are new routes this year due to the Nickle Cup activities at the water. You will be supplied with the route maps and also the Scavenger Hunt clues for families to participate in for some added fun along the way.”
In the spirit of cooperation, Bird and Gow have worked together throughout the preceding months to make sure both runs attract as many people as possible. While still independent, they firmly believe that all of the funds collected are important, and all are going to help beat cancer. In addition to the run on Sunday, Saturday night (September 16) they will be holding a Juke Box Trivia evening at the Branch 92 Royal Canadian Legion.
“This is a fun filled, entertaining evening to raise funds for the Terry Fox Foundation,” said Bird. “You get to test your music, TV theme songs, or jingle knowledge – everyone has some skill. We are looking for individuals or teams of 6 to come and have some fun, with proceeds going to the Terry Fox Foundation for cancer Research. We need to continue his dream and beat this killer disease.”
The doors open at 6: 30 with the games starting at 7 p.m.. Individuals can play for $25 per person, while groups of six register at $125. Funds raised go to the united Terry Fox Runs of Gananoque and TLTI to make a giant donation to the Terry Fox Foundation. Please contact Bird for more information on the event.
“Remember, the only enemy here is cancer,” said Gow. “Everyone who comes out to run is a hero in the fight and brings us one step closer to winning. So many great things are happening this year – I’m so proud of every member of our Dream Team. Whichever run you choose, we’ll be happy to see you. This is not a competition – it’s a united show of strength against cancer. When you run, you support everyone everywhere who lives with cancer, and every dollar raised goes to help fund the research to beat it. Let’s get out there and make Terry proud.”
