MP seeks model parliament participants
Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark said on Tuesday, Oct. 3 that those interested in getting an inside look at how legislation is passed at Queen’s Park should apply for the Legislative Assembly of Ontario’sModel Parliament program.
Through theModel Parliament Program experience, youthfromacrossOntario “gain a stronger knowledge of the province’s parliamentary practices and traditions while participating inanauthentic experience thatwill teach them the value and importance of our democratic process.”
The program is a relatively new educational program designedfor“civic-mindedhigh school students” ingrades 10 to 12whoare interested incurrent eventsandprovincial issues.
The educational experience brings together 107 students, representing each of the province’s ridings, for a three-day Model Parliament Program in Toronto.
“It’s important to give young people an opportunity to get engagedinthepoliticalprocess, to see the impact ithas ontheir day-to-day lives and develop a better understanding of how thesystemworks,” said Clark.
“TheModel Parliament programis a great way to gain that insight and I know students who have represented LeedsGrenvilleinpreviousyearsreally valued the experience.”
Applications forthethree-day programarebeingaccepteduntil October 30.Students selected to participatewillbeatQueen’sPark fromFebruary21-23,2018.
Duringtheprogram, students haveanopportunity tomeetthe keyofficialsinthelegislature, tour the building, learn about its historyandstudytheprovince’slegislativeprocess.
The highlight of the three days, Clarksaid, iswhenstudents take their seats intheLegislative Assembly Chamber to participate in adebate as the‘MPP’ for theirhomeriding.
He said he has been “honouredinpastyears” toparticipate by servingas theSpeaker for the simulated session of theAssembly.
