MP seeks model par­lia­ment par­tic­i­pants

Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark said on Tues­day, Oct. 3 that those in­ter­ested in get­ting an inside look at how leg­is­la­tion is passed at Queen’s Park should apply for the Leg­isla­tive Assem­bly of On­tario’sModel Par­lia­ment pro­gram.

Through theModel Par­lia­ment Pro­gram ex­pe­ri­ence, youth­fro­macrossOn­tario “gain a stronger knowl­edge of the prov­ince’s par­lia­men­tary prac­tices and tra­di­tions while par­tic­i­pat­ing ina­nau­then­tic ex­pe­ri­ence thatwill teach them the value and im­por­tance of our demo­cratic process.”

The pro­gram is a rel­a­tively new ed­u­ca­tional pro­gram de­signed­for“civic-mind­ed­high school stu­dents” in­grades 10 to 12whoare in­ter­ested in­cur­rent eventsand­provin­cial is­sues.

The ed­u­ca­tional ex­pe­ri­ence brings to­gether 107 stu­dents, rep­re­sent­ing each of the prov­ince’s rid­ings, for a three-day Model Par­lia­ment Pro­gram in Toronto.

“It’s im­por­tant to give young peo­ple an op­por­tu­nity to get en­gagedinthe­p­o­lit­i­cal­pro­cess, to see the im­pact ithas on­their day-to-day lives and de­velop a bet­ter un­der­stand­ing of how thesys­tem­works,” said Clark.

“TheModel Par­lia­ment pro­gramis a great way to gain that in­sight and I know stu­dents who have rep­re­sented Leed­sGrenvillein­pre­vi­ousyearsre­ally val­ued the ex­pe­ri­ence.”

The high­light of the three days, Clark­said, iswhen­stu­dents take their seats intheLeg­isla­tive Assem­bly Cham­ber to par­tic­i­pate in ade­bate as the‘MPP’ for theirhome­rid­ing.

He said he has been “hon­oured­in­pastyears” topar­tic­i­pate by servin­gas theS­peaker for the sim­u­lated ses­sion of theAssem­bly.
