Halloween fun on ice

Skating club gets all dressed up

The Gananoque Reporter - - FRONT PAGE - LORI KIDD VELKOVA

The Halloween Skate is always a special night for the skaters of the Gananoque Skating Club (GSC). The skaters are encouraged to wear costumes, safe ones of course, no long scarves or dragging fabrics and there are spooky decorations around the arena. Most of the skaters participate as well as the Program Assistants and Coaches with a nice array of police caps taped to helmets and the always popular cat ears and whiskers. It creates a lovely festive atmosphere while the skaters continue their lessons and exercises on the ice. Afterwards the skaters received well- deserved treats baked and/or donated by the Clubs dedicated parent volunteers.

The Club always makes a big deal before Christmas, too. A special guest often comes on the ice and treats are a highlight as well. That special evening is especially fun for the CanSkaters because lessons are put off and they get full run of the ice for the entire session.

If you are wishing that you had signed up for skating lessons for yourself or your kids, you are still welcome to do so! Our CanSkate program serves all ages and abilities, twice a week. Registration and ice fees will be prorated to the date of your first skate. A talented skater can complete the program in a short amount of time. Skills are continually built on the foundational skills previously learned. GSC has skaters of all ages and abilities and programs that offer minimal or maximal ice time depending on your interest.

Upon completing the CanSkate program, the GSC offers the STAR Skate program over three sessions per week. This is a fun, low stress program for improving skaters to complete and it doesn’t require travel or competitions, though those are still a possibility. STAR stands for Skills, Tests, Achievement, and Recognition. STAR Skate offers opportunities for skaters to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, skating skills, free skate and interpretive skating. These skills are taught in a group, semi-private and/ or private lesson format in a progressive and sequential manner with specifically designed awards and incentives to keep the athletes eager to accomplish the next level.

For future hockey stars, GSC offers a popular Power Skills program for ages 4-7 or 8-13 who have some previous skating experience and want to hone their skating abilities and become better players.

The next 8-week session will start January 2018.
