WHEN HATE MEETS LOVE My Funny Valentine was honoured with the Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards’ Sydney Risk Prize for an outstanding original script by an emerging playwright when it debuted in 2011—and small wonder. Zee Zee Theatre’s Dave Deveau deftly interwove monologues to show how a community deals with the aftermath of a homophobic hate crime—in this case, the real, heartbreaking murder of 15-year-old Larry King. If you missed it the first time around, it’s worth catching and, unfortunately, as timely as ever: Zee Zee is bringing the play back here, after a trip to Toronto’s Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, to commemorate the murder’s 10th anniversary.

My Funny Valentine runs from Wednesday (February 7) to February 18 at the Scotiabank Dance Centre.
